Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Working for the Pony Express during the mid-19th century was dangerous, exciting, and shortlived. The United States was just beginning to expand to the Pacific Ocean and it was necessary to create some way to send news from coast to coast. The Pony Express was created by three enterprising shipping businessmen but was operated by a group of brave, young men who were more than willing to ride dozens of miles a day for good pay. For eighteen months, the Pony Express carried news across the country at a crucial point in U.S. history. Despite the popularity and mythology that arose around Pony Express riders, the truth was that the ride traversed dangerous terrain and seeing the Pony Express rider crossing the country did not please everyone. The illustrations follow a Pony Express rider from the time he learns about the Pony Express to the end of the Pony Express when telegraph wires were strung across the country. The text is easy to read and peppered with interesting facts about the Pony Express and will appeal to anyone interested in the old west. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
