Children's Literature - Elisabeth GreenbergThis entertaining rendition of Viking history is loaded with facts, a good dose of reality, and lots of humor. The romance of Viking exploration is brought down to earth on the first page by a mention of over-population and the need for new land for farming and homes. The book is written directly to “you,” the reader, and verbalizes “your” thoughts. Of course, you would like to go to Greenland, until you find out it is not green, but it is cold! Of course, you would like to move on to another new land, but is the crowded, dirty, hard sea voyage worth it? This is an excellent addition to a class or school library, especially for students who are just discovering history. The text is filled with interesting trivia, such as the origins of the word “berserk” and how to steer a ship at sea at night. The illustrations effectively present the information visually, while bringing a smile to the reader’s face. Front and back matter include a timeline of Viking explorations, a glossary, an index, short bios of major Viking explorers, and an epilogue on the Vikings. Reviewer: Elisabeth Greenberg; Ages 8 to 12.
