Children's Literature - Veronica Bartles
Part of the “You Wouldn’t Want to Be” series, this book puts young readers into the life of George Robert Twelves Hewes, one of the Sons of Liberty involved in the early colonial uprisings against the British. With Antram’s hilarious, cartoon-style illustrations helping to tell the story, Cook walks young readers through the American Revolution, from the Stamp Act through the Boston Tea Party and a few major battles of the war, to the forming of a new nation. Unlike other books in the series, this book does not focus on Hewes as the one key player in the story, but he is an integral part of the narrative. Contrary to title the Boston Tea Party is not the true focus of this book, which covers the whole of the American Revolution in one short volume. Although the broad scope of the topic did not allow for the in-depth exploration of the subject found in other “You Wouldn’t Want to Be” volumes, it is a fun introduction to the war as a whole. A table of contents and an index make it easy to look up specific points in the war’s timeline, and a glossary at the end of the book makes the text easy to understand. As always, Cook and Antram have given readers a lighthearted frolic through history, sure to leave children of all ages wanting more. Reviewer: Veronica Bartles; Ages 8 up.
