Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Lack of information about ancient civilizations makes them an easy target for supernatural tales and mysterious legends. Despite the information learned about the ancient Egyptians, myths and legends about the civilization continue to appear regularly in literature and news sources. The most famous curse is the curse of King Tut's tomb. This engaging text not only provides a basic history of the boy king and the story of the curse that spread after discovery of his tomb, but also provides basic information about the mummification process used in ancient Egypt and the funeral rites used to bury pharaohs. The last half of the book is occupied with detailing the events that led to belief of a curse and providing explanations of how unfortunate events would have occurred without the existence of a curse. The illustrations are fun cartoons that offer tidbits of trivia and add amusing facts to the text. The text is simple and easy to read and makes an adequate introduction to Egyptian burial practices as well as to the curse that surrounds the history of King Tutankhamen. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
