Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
This book in the "You Wouldn't Want to Be" series presents a colorful picture of life in the Middle Ages. Written as a guide for an aspiring jailer, the text focuses on the types of prisons or jail cells found in medieval castles. Cartoon-like illustrations depict examples of the oubliette, the outdoor cage, the bottle dungeon and other horrible places prisoners were kept. Readers will learn that all prisoners were not guilty of crimes, but simply had offended someone in power or were shipwrecked and could not prove their identities. Jailers often supplemented their incomes by providing special services for wealthy prisoners such as decent food and a clean cell. Through the characters presented in the book, the reader can derive a picture of life in a typical castle. "Handy Hints" throughout provide ideas to make the jailer's life easier. For example, the jailer should not have dogs or cats which would chase away rats and mice, making the prisoners' experiences more pleasant. The end pages provide even more information. The inside cover presents a timeline of castle history followed by a map showing famous castles in Britain and Europe. The inside back cover lists and describes the top five spooky castles. A glossary and index are also provided. The humorous depictions of historical information will appeal to reluctant readers. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
