Description:The development of neurosurgery during the last century has been impressive, particularly in the decrease in mortality an morbidity with the advent of better imaging modalities, surgical techniques, and neuroprotective strategies. It is a major challenge to summarize these developments in a concise and yet readable format to be used throughout the years of a neurosurgeon's career. This was the major objective of this fifth edition textbook.
Purpose:The purpose is to address every aspect of neurosurgery, including basic neuroscience, basic surgical techniques, and operative details not contained in many current books.
Audience:The audience is composed of neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and any other professionals who would deal with diseases of the central nervous system and different treatment modalities. The book addresses all of these readers and should be considered a good source of information for any of them.
Features:The deluge of information about basic neurosurgical and neurological sciences is intermingled with historical facts about the beautiful art of neurosurgery and the most common applications of the current techniques. In the four-volume publication, there is a good distribution of information regarding all aspects of neurosurgery. Each volume is written by multiple well known authors, the great majority neurosurgeons, who share their expertise in a concise, well written, updated, and exuberantly illustrated encyclopedia of neurosurgery. The first volume deals with the general aspects of neurosurgery and neurological critical care of patients with brain tumors, intracranial hemorrhages, and subarachnoid hemorrhages. In addition, a well illustrated part on neuro-oncology describes, in detail, approaches to neoplasms of the central nervous system. Volumes two through four subdivide neurosurgery into its vascular, spine, pediatric, and trauma subparts. The illustrations are well done and the color pictures are of good quality. The references are up-to-date until about a year prior to publication and the index is very helpful, providing a good manner to find topics in each of the four volumes.
Assessment:This is a great buy for any general medical or neuroscience library. This book is a permanent reference for the ever-growing field of neurosurgery.
