Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Balancing anecdotes with key events in Abe Lincoln's childhood and early adulthood, Harness (Three Young Pilgrims) fashions a credible, highly personal portrait. Born in the Kentucky woods one February night when "winter winds were whooping and whipping round the cabin," Abe early on displayed his obsession with learning. Harness makes her point through text and art: one of her realistic, vividly colored illustrations, for example, shows the boy writing in the dust with a stick; the text, meanwhile, has Abe's father hollering from the fields, "Come git to work!" Later, after the family crossed the Ohio River to settle in Indiana, Abe walked for miles to borrow books from neighbors and read constantlyeven while working his father's farmland. Though Harness's even account makes mention of low points in young Abe's life, including the death of his mother, which left the nine-year-old "sunk in sadness, too sad for words," her concluding image is of a 28-year-old full of hope and promise, riding toward Springfield, Ill., with his new license to practice law tucked into the band of his stovepipe hat. Harness thereby sets the stage for her next work, The Stovepipe Hat: Abe Goes to Washington, 1837-1865, for which this personable book will create a ready audience. Ages 5-10. (May)
Children's Literature
Cheryl Harness determined to bring the real Abraham Lincoln to life in paintings and text for young readers by researching his life and times in Young Abe Lincoln. Each painting recreates Abe's young life in its harshness, its sadness, its drudgery and adventure. He read avidly and enjoyed listening to the rivermen and farmers talking politics. A foreshadowing of the future. The crowd scenes bustle with activity and depict people who belong in the time period. The maps are pictorial and colorful. A rich biography.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6A picture-book format and attractive full-color illustrations may draw beginning readers to this book, but the content makes it more appropriate for intermediate students. The level and amount of text combined with the use of such words as "lam" and "cipherin" will be difficult for poor or early readers. In addition, the narrative is sometimes a bit confusing, with some brief but detailed scenes followed too quickly by and glossing over an event that occurred years later. Time seems to telescope then stop, to move in fits and starts. Transitions are weak to nonexistent. Also, Harness includes unexplained references that will further confuse readers: "Abe Lincoln was ambitious to be known as the `DeWitt Clinton of Illinois.' " On the other hand, the author's glowing paintings successfully bring to life the subject, his surroundings, and the people around him. As a read-aloud, the book might be effective.Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA
