Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Young Cam Jansen and her friends are looking for a lost baseball in this entertaining chapter book. Cam's real name is Jennifer, but she earned this nickname because of her great memory¾Cam is short for "the Camera." A number on the camera in the lower right hand corner of the book's cover tells readers that this is Young Cam Jansen's fifth mystery book. Cam uses her amazing memory to help solve mysteries in all of her books. Illustrations showing a diverse group of children playing ball in a park complement an engaging story spread over five well-written chapters. Cam, a confident, kind-hearted young girl, is an admirable role model for children. A Cam Jansen "Memory Game" is included in all of her books. This title is one in the publisher's "Easy to Read" series. More advanced readers should check out the "Cam Jansen Adventure" series, in which a more mature Cam solves mysteries with her friend Eric. 1999, Puffin Books/Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, $3.99. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati

Cam, with her photographic memory, once again solves a mystery for her friends. During an exciting game of baseball, the ball is hit far over everyone's heads and they must leave the ball field to find it. Not in a puddle, under a tree, or being used by other kids, the search takes the group on a dog hunt. Natti's colorful illustrations bring life to this book from the "beginning to read" program.

Gr 1-2Blink your eyes and say, Click. Thats all it takes for Cam Jansen to recall a scene with amazing accuracy. Her visual memory comes to bear yet again in this story of a baseball lost in a crowded park. Her sleuthing skills, as well as her good sense, keep her friends from making false accusations. Instead, they work together to solve the mystery. Nattis illustrations underscore Cams visual memories and provide perceptive readers with helpful clues. The books format and text are right on target for beginning readers.Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries, NE Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
