Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
The author looks at the young life of this famous writer, orator, publisher, and statesman. Born with great intelligence, Douglass decided that reading and writing might hold the keys to helping him escape the bonds of slavery. The book focuses on his courageous struggle to acquire both learning and freedom.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Based on Douglass's autobiographical writings, this brief biography reads like a novel with its use of dialogue and descriptions of thoughts and feelings. Beginning with his eighth year, Girard concentrates on her subject's lifelong struggle against the degradations of slavery and injustice and shows his strength of character and intelligence as he learns to read and write, escapes to freedom, and uses the power of pen and voice to become a spokesperson for equality and integration. The clear, well-written text makes the book a fine read-aloud. The full-page paintings are consistently well done, depicting expressive, recognizable characters. For the same age group, David Adler's A Picture Book of Frederick Douglass (Holiday, 1993) covers the full span of the man's life in a nonfictionalized style. Older readers will want to read the real thing-Douglass's autobiography. Barbara Ritchie's The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass (Crowell, 1966; o.p.) is a good adaptation of that work.-Eunice Weech, M.L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL
