Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Based on the Occupational Outlook Handbook, published by the U.S. Department of Labor for adults, this young person's version is fun to browse but too lean to provide much of the information needed to help with a career choice. Each job description is allowed a single page, which is filled more by icons and boxed information than by text. On the plus side, the pages are clear and easy to read, with corresponding facts in the same place from page to page. Many pages include Web sites related to particular occupations. A look at several sites revealed such helpful information as the requirements to become a stone mason, flight attendant, pilot, and dealer at a casino. The introduction is excellent, both explaining how to use the book as well as offering some basic advice about how to choose a career. As advised in that introduction, use this book as a springboard to the adult publication for those teens curious about the world of work. Index. Illus. VOYA Codes: 3Q 3P M J (Readable without serious defects; Will appeal with pushing; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2003, JIST,
