Overview

A standard blood test indicates how well the kidneys and liver are functioning, the potential for heart disease, and a host of other vital health markers. Unfortunately, most of us cannot decipher these results ourselves, nor can we even formulate the right questions to ask about them—or we couldn’t until now.

In Your Blood Never Lies, best-selling author James LaValle clears up the mystery surrounding blood test results. In simple language, he explains all of the information found on these forms, making it understandable and accessible. This means that you can look at the results yourself and know the significance of each marker. Dr. LaValle even recommends the most effective conventional and complementary treatments for dealing with any problematic findings. Rounding out the book are the names of test markers that should be requested for a more complete physical picture.

A blood test can reveal so much about your body, but only if you can interpret the results. Your Blood Never Lies provides the up-to-date information you need to take control of your health.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Clinical pharmacist and nutrition and metabolism expert LaValle (Cracking the Metabolic Code), who heads the company Life Time Fitness, offers a comprehensive guide to understanding blood tests in this useful volume. The book is divided into logical sections that reflect the blood test itself: “The Lipid Panel,” “The Basic Metabolic Panel,” “The Hepatic Function Panel,” “Complete Blood Count,” “Hormones,” and “Optional Tests.” In each section, LaValle clearly explains what the numbers mean, noting that “normal” does not necessarily translate into “healthy” or “optimal.” Arguing that blood tests should be read much like trends in the stock market, LaValle urges readers to probe deeply and examine the results, employing the blood test as a preventive-care tool that can help ward off such problems as diabetes and heart disease. The blood test, he asserts, should serve as a “blueprint” for present as well as future health. In each section, LaValle also thoroughly describes medication, lifestyle, and dietary changes that may be required to address issues uncovered by test results; readers can identify what the suggested medical treatment would likely be and also discover alternative methods for improving their numbers. This patient-empowering text will help readers decipher their blood test results, and, more importantly, it serves as a guide to preventive care. (July)

Pharmacist Lavalle (metabolic medicine, Sch. of Medicine, Univ. of South Florida; Green Immunity Boosters: Botanicals for Immunity) is founder of Lavalle Metabolic Institute and Integrative Health Resources. He states that this work "will teach you how to interpret your blood test results" and occasionally show "patterns that may indicate" risk for certain conditions. One of the first such books since Common Blood Tests: What Every Patient Must Know About Lab Tests, this title covers four commonly used blood tests: lipid panel, which includes cholesterol; metabolic panel, including sodium; hepatic function panel; and complete blood count. Also included are several selected hormone and optional tests. Each test contains information about treatment and possible causes of abnormal readings. This selectively indexed book is very clearly written, and references are, for the most part, from the recent scientific literature. Lavalle weighs in on some controversial findings: he does not ban eggs for individuals with high cholesterol, and he promotes cinnamon for high blood sugar. VERDICT Certain to be in demand at public and consumer health libraries, but, as the author emphasizes, readers must always consult with their own doctors.—Martha Stone, Treadwell Lib., Boston
