Ashton, a New Jerseygynecologist, CBS News medical correspondent, and author (The Body Scoop for Girls), and journalist Rojo present a five-part plan to bolster women’s health now and in the future. Ashton, 42, argues that the 30s and 40s are foundational, make-or-break decades for lifetime health and “not a time to coast, health-wise.” In the first section, the authors address diet, exercise (incorporating high intensity interval training and weight training), beauty and sleep, stress reduction, and better sex. Section two focuses in separate chapters on hormones, breast health, heart health, osteoporosis, cancer prevention, and other diseases. Ashton, who describes herself as “old-school medicine with a new age approach” divides each topic into manageable five-week stretches designed to be repeated until new habits become second nature (i.e., for diet, cut bad carbs in week one, don’t drink your calories in week two, add a mid-morning protein snack in week three, add colors to your plate in week four, and add an afternoon protein booster, week five). She even includes a user-friendly five-week plan for revving up one’s sex life (week one, schedule in sex on the calendar). Combination pep talk and warning, Ashton’s message that women can and should take control of their own future health in these critical decades is backed up by current research and up-to-the-minute disease-prevention info. OB-GYN Ashton's (The Body Scoop for Girls) premise is that the good health habits women develop during their thirties and forties will keep them strong and vibrant in later life. It is also easier for people to change their habits, she notes, while they are still relatively young. Regular exercise and a healthy diet, as well as eliminating overly processed foods from their diets, will enable women's bodies to age more gracefully. Ashton's workout focuses on high-intensity interval training and owes a lot to Ayurveda practices. No gimmicks here, just good advice.

On a mission to educate women ages 30 through 50 about making manageable changes to daily routines to ensure they carry their vibrancy into their 50s and beyond, OB-GYN and CBS News medical correspondent Ashton (The Body Scoop for Girls, 2009) presents a self-improvement plan involving "clock-stopping" tweaks in diet, exercise, skincare, stress management and sex life. As evidence, the author offers her own success at juggling two kids, two dogs, a happy relationship with her physician husband, a busy practice and daily TV appearances, alongside the observation that "the vast majority" of those included in Forbes' 2010 list of the world's 50 most powerful women "were in their forties or older." Encouraging readers to attempt the various behavioral modifications she suggests in five-week increments--"you can do anything for five weeks"--Ashton employs simple math and everyday contextualizing in doling out her advice. For example, in her "Five-Day/Two-Day" diet, she advises, "cut bad carbs and eat lots of veggies, fruits, and proteins" on weekdays, and "then take it easier on the weekends." A beauty tip for healthier skin includes the exuberant recommendation to apply at least 20 minutes before going outside "as much sunscreen as would fit in a shot glass," while a subheading for a section on breast reduction is glibly titled, "Honey, I Shrunk the Tits." The author's positive attitude, generally practical health recommendations and sassy style combine to lend her professional advice wide appeal.     I just saw her on Good Morning America talking about skin care.

    I just saw her on Good Morning America talking about skin care. I am a Master Aesthetician and when she mentioned scrubbing your face with sugar or salt I almost fell off my chair! NO...you do not need to exfoliate every day when you get older. Your skin cells turn over LESS frequently and you should only be scrubbing with a scrub that is for your skin type and don't get me started on those cleansing brushes!! First, you cannot santize them. Second, no one uses them properly and they leave little micro tears all over your face. Can you stay Plastic Surgeon in your future??? Unbelievable! The fact that Dr. Oz is promoting her book just tells me as a professional and a consumer that it truly is NOT WHAT YOU KNOW...BUT WHO YOU KNOW. I would never listen to anything this doctor has to say. Just her skin care advice alone is completely ridiculous. Why does every Gynocologist have to enter into the world off beauty and medical spas when they should be focusing on women's general health. Ugh....

    This book changed my life!

    Ive never had trouble with my weight until I turned 30. In 5 yrs I was 50lbs overweight and miserable. I started working out and lost 30 lbs over several months. Then the weight loss stopped even though I continued to workout. I was running up to 5 miles a day. I couldnt understand what I was doing wrong. My body did not reflect my workout intensity. I didnt feel my diet was bad in any way. I bought this book because I was interested in the aging of my body since I had turned 40 this year. I liked the way the book read. Easy to understand and follow. Dr. Ashton divides the 'life style' change into 5 wks. I figured I could try it for 5 wks. It isnt a diet. I like that she makes it a point to say that it isnt a diet. It changes the choices you make. She says that if you dont get results in 5 wks then it is your portion sizes. I lost 5 lbs in the first week! And I consistantly lost weight each month that I have continued. I still continue my 'lifestyle' change to this day, 6 months later. And I have lost a total of 28lbs! This book is life changing if you follow her advice. It includes workout advice as well and the combination really gets results. I have finally lost those last 20 lbs and more. I take care of my dad and he is 71 yrs old and he has been following this 'lifestyle' change as well. He has lost 23 lbs so far. This program is for all ages and not just for women. I have recommended this book to many people. I have so many people asking what I have done and I always say 'you have to get this book'. Iam giving this book to a couple of my family members for Christmas this year. Get this book. It is worth the money. It changed everything for my dad and I. Thank you Dr. Ashton!

    Great natural information

    I believe in natural products and I have used some of the suggestions in this book. They work great. The sunflower oil for moisturizing the skin is great and using the cleanser and exfoliant, I see a pleasant difference in the feel and appearance of my skin. Very good book. Other helpful information as well.
