Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Orosz
This book was aptly written for young girls of the 90's. It has been a decade when children younger and younger have been expected to behave older and older. In this easy to read question and answer style, Bell provides a thorough resource for girls starting at the age of nine. The focus is on their changing bodies and the questions they have that can be confusing, embarrassing and definitely personal. Because they are so personal, many of these questions have gone unasked and unanswered up till now. The author's straightforward style provides the facts about puberty for girls, and it even gives a little insight into what is happening to boys' bodies at the same age. Bell adds a personal touch when she begins each chapter with a related experience she herself had at that age, letting them know she is a writer who can relate to the struggles they experience. The illustrations are at times humorous, instructive or used to emphasize an important point and are very effective. Though not targeted for parents, a reading of this book offers valuable insight into the concerns their daughters have about their bodies and may better equip them for the discussions that hopefully will follow. Part of the "Your Body, Yourself" series.
