Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
"For language buffs and for teachers who wish for a creative aid in explaining the various plural forms, this is a good choice."
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4 Unlike most of Terban's language books such as In a Pickle & Other Funny Idioms 1983 and Too Hot to Hoot 1985, both Clarion, this one, with its drier content, is suited more specifically to classroom use. The plural forms of about 90 irregular nouns are presented straightforwardly but with humor. Implicitly communicated is the rich diversity of the English language. Maestro's two-color illustrations are clever and enhance and extend the text. Terban divides the nouns among those that change their endings elf/elves; those that change in the middle foot/feet; those that do not change at all moose/moose; those that have more than one plural wharfs/wharves; and oddities, such as paraphenalia, chassis, etc. He even includes a discussion of the sexism in using man/men in so many words and explains that people is now often used to solve that problem. For language buffs and for teachers who wish for a creative aid in explaining the various plural forms, this is a good choice. Deborah Vose, Brooklyn Friends School Library
