Editorial Reviews

Ilene Cooper
Curran, a 4-H leader, gives kids the complete lowdown on guinea pigs: how to select them, breed them, feed them, and show them. The information is very clearly presented, with lots of pictures and charts to bolster the text. Besides the basics, Curran gets into some rather esoteric information, for instance, how to tattoo or tag a guinea pig's ear and how to cut its toenails. The tattooing and tagging procedures, particularly, seem like activities that might warrant having an adult present, but this seems to be a guide that encourages kids to do for themselves. Curran even informs readers how to treat anal impaction! A reference guide to the diseases and conditions that may affect guinea pigs is appended, as is a glossary.

Meet the Author

Although parents are typically the ones who introduce their children to new experiences, author Wanda L. Curran first gained interest in guinea pigs (cavies) when her daughter Nancy joined 4-H and developed a successful and prosperous hobby. Wanda then became an adult 4-H leader in guinea pigs and rabbits and was inspired to write the book Your Guinea Pig. She is a member of the Golden State Cavy Breeders Association, the American Cavy Breeders Association, and the Oroville, Downtown Oroville, and Trendsetters 4-H Community Clubs. She lives in Oroville, California with her husband John.

    THE book about guinea pigs

As a 4-H leader I have found this to be the best book available on all aspects of raising guinea pigs (cavies). Especially helpful are the chapters on showing and showmanship. The book is clear enough for children but comprehensive enough for all ages. The pictures, charts, and diagrams are excellent. I recommend it whole-heartedly to both novice and experienced guinea pig owners.
