Overview

Jerry Newport, diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome / High Functioning Autism at age 47, wrote this book for those with developmental disorders, but it resonates with people with any disability. His message: everyone has the power, and the right, to improve the quality of their lives despite their disability. Don't believe you must be "normal" to be happy; learn to co-exist with neuro-typicals, and become the best human being you can be. Jerry candidly reveals his own failures and successes. His heartfelt advice stems from a deep sense of caring for "his people" on the spectrum. If you read only one personal account about autism, this should be it!

Editorial Reviews

Publisher
Your Life is Not a Label

This is a wonderful new addition to the list of books written by individuals on the autism spectrum for several important reasons. First, it is not an autobiography. This is Jerry's advice to others who live with autism about maximizing their potential and minimizing their grief. The book is written in what I call "pure, vintage, Jerry Newport." By that I mean that those of us who interact with Jerry personally and those who hear him speak know of his tremendous wit and ability to express his opinions and observations clearly. I would recommend Jerry's book to all MAAP readers: parents, professionals, individuals on the spectrum and others who care about this population

For Anyone on The Spectrum and their Neurotypical Supports

This book is a 'must read'....practial advice from someone who has been through it. The Chapter 'Time Out' is a wonderful insight into Jerry's incredibly fantastic mind!

    A MUST READ!

Way to go, Jerry! This is the first book in a long time on Asperger Syndrome that I just couldn't put down. It is insightful, practical and direct--just like Jerry himself. A must read for teens and adults with autism spectrum disorders and those that love and work with

    Common sense for living

Jerry's book fills in a badly needed gap in the Autism and Asperger literature. His down-home common sense descriptions and recommendations for living a fulfilling life and navigating the world hits a home run as a great resource to both our peers on the autism spectrum as well as others that are part of our community. The 'glass is never full or but it's never empty' chapter is most poignant and touching.
