Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Based on their West Coast self-help seminars, Dominguez and Robin here map a route to financial security through a relaxed, prudent and environmentally-friendly way of life. Systemically analyzing one's overspending, as in the case histories cited, and calculating the ``life-energy'' cost time, expenses, stress of a competitive career, the authors maintain, can lead to reduced occupational expectations and to surprisingly large economies effected by pre-pricing food, clothing, transportation, loan rates, heath care and so on. Resulting surpluses, invested in Treasury bonds, will yield compound income eventually covering the reduced expenses. This ``crossover point'' brings financial independence, according to the authors, and freedom to choose one's work for greater personal satisfaction and the ``commonweal.'' Some readers may be put off by the finicky detail and intense tone of the course, but few will fail to find here new insight and encouragement. Sept.
Library Journal
Think environmentally, live frugally, and don't be surprised if your income shoots off the top of the chart that Dominguez, a former Wall Street financial analyst, and Robin ask you to put up on your wall. With this promise, they promote the possibility and goal of having ``enough'' money in your life. The wall chart of income, expenses, and investments is one of several very detailed records they mandate to support your attitude change. Others are a record of lifetime income and computation of your real working income, translated into ``hours of life energy.'' It would be hard to carry out their nine-step program without frequent recourse to the book for continued inspiration and implementing detail. A marginal purchase for most libraries.--Justine Roberts, Mill Valley, Cal.

    It worked for us

Before reading this book, my wife and I lived in a large metropolitan area and commuted 3 hours a day so that we could earn the income we thought we needed. This book caused us to think about what would really make us happy. We spent the next two years pondering this question, exploring different places to live and reading other books on simple living. After finally getting up enough confidence, we made the move to simplify our lifestyle. Now we live in a small town, earn 80% less income and have a much happier, less stressful, rich and full life with time for family, friends and community involvement. And, I should add, we have everything we need. This book is a good starting point and gives you the language to explore your relationship with money and how it relates to what really makes you happy. I highly recommend it if you have a feeling that your life is perhaps a little too complicated or too centered around earning money.

Bringing a financial plan to voluntary simplicity.

I saw this book referenced in so many books before I actually picked it up. I see why now. It's about getting your finances and your priorities in order, and eventually getting to the point where you don't have to work. The authors ask you to make some difficult choices - but they don't seem so difficult when you look at the goal. I was more entertained and motivated during reading this book than with other financial books I've read, but at the same time feel like I've come up with a better strategy. I took a second look at some of our spending and assets after reading this book, and my husband and I now have a 2-year plan, so that I can stay home with our daughter.

    Can't recommend ANYTHING else!

This book was forced upon me by a college professor who tends to be outrageously loud about what she believes. Being a college student with much debt in store after graduation, I could understand a teacher having us read this book. However, the only reason she had us read the book was because of her grass-roots activism. Anyway, I am thankful that this book came my way. The authors defined and illustrated money issues including debt in a way I had never imagined before. This book brings into play your own values and enjoyment of life while combining financial issues. Usually happiness and money do not go hand in hand unless you have more than you can spare. I recommend this book to anyone even if they are not struggling with financial issues.

I AM THE PROUD OWNER OF LAND FOR MY FUTURE HOME

I have come across many financial self-help strategy books in my time (I'm only 34 and much wiser than some people), but this book stands by itself! I've read books on what is described as the 'snowball effect'. Don't get me wrong, it truly works, but I recommend reading this book before any others. This book brought my attention to my relationship with money and how I abuse it (and my time). All I can say is after reading this book (which I'm going to read it again), is that I began a financial brainstorm, paid down all my debt and bought a piece of property (WITH CASH) which was saved. I had a goal of saving $15,000 in one year. Well, more was saved than that. I am now saving to build my dream home (but only what I NEED, not what I WANT). Remember that & you will have a stress free life. GET THIS BOOK NOW! AND ENJOY!
