Library Journal
Opening with environmentally sensitive renovations on an older house, the authors then cover design considerations for a weekend retreat, urban apartment, and new construction. With 17 years of experience writing about and building environmentally sensitive homes, Marinelli and Bierman-Lytle offer examples brimming with useful ideas. Their discussion of the environmental impact of home construction materials, heating/cooling systems, and home furnishings make up the bulk of the book. The effects on air quality, pollution, and energy consumption during fabrication, use, and disposal after use are all considered. Special chapters list products used in children's rooms and home maintenance products for cleaning and pest control. While similar in subject to David Pearson's The Natural House Book (LJ 11/15/89), the emphasis here is on detailed consideration of materials, and there are extensive up-to-date lists for sources of environmentally friendly materials. A useful resource for renovators or builders concerned about allergy problems or the environment.Cheryl Childress, Collegiate Sch., Richmond, Va.
