Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
This volume from the "Out and About with Your Senses" series explores the five senses at the beach. Four of the senses are given a fourpage spread consisting of two pages of short sentences and two pages of reinforcing photos, while smell is relegated to a twopage section. Readers are invited to see "Miles of brown sand and blue water;" to hear "People laugh. Dogs bark;" to touch "gritty sand" and "cool water;" to smell "salt, fish and seaweed everywhere;" and finally to taste "a snack on the boardwalk." With simple sentences and repetitive text this is a good addition to materials introducing the five senses to the youngest of readers. Older students may find the short sentences and lack of information a bit frustrating. Wellchosen photographs help the visual appeal of the book and contribute to understanding of the material presented. A table of contents is included as well as a glossary, index, suggestion for further reading and a suggestion to visit the publisher's website for more information. What's really lacking here is in the support materials. The "Read More" section lists only two books, one each on hearing and smell and nothing for the remaining senses. The direction to (which asks the reader to type in the entire 13 digit ISBN number to search for related materials) reveals a link to a beach page at Enchanted Learning and a link to a website on senses that is considerably above the reading level of this book. Words presented in the glossary are not indicated in the text and the word sense is not defined except in the glossary. This book is certainly nice to look at and easy to read but lacking in useful material. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
