Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
This installment of the “Out and About with Your Senses” series seeks to introduce early readers to new vocabulary in the context of a fire station. Children and adults in the photos appear to represent ethnic diversity and there are some female firefighters pictured as well. Although not all children have visited a fire station, firefighters are recognizable figures, and the interactions pictured are positive. In addition to the brief chapters for each of the five senses, the book offers a glossary, additional readings, an index, and links to the Capstone Press “FactHound” web site. The glossary is far from comprehensive, and most beginning readers will need assistance with a number of words that are not included. Print is large with lots of white space on each page, facilitating a read-along process. Full-page photographs directly connect to the text, making this a potentially useful book for second language learners of a greater age range. This would be a reasonable addition to a school, classroom, or public library. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.; Ages 6 to 8.
