Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
This installment in the “Out and About with Your Senses” series seeks to introduce early readers to new vocabulary in the context of the grocery store. In addition to the brief chapters for each of the five senses, the book offers a glossary, additional readings, an index, and links to the Capstone Press “FactHound” web site. The glossary is far from comprehensive, and most beginning readers will need assistance with a number of words that are not included. Print is large with lots of white space on each page, facilitating a read-along process. Full-page photographs directly connect to the text, making this a potentially useful book for second language learners of a greater age range. The young girl shown in the photos is non-Caucasian which makes this book feel more accessible to diverse audiences. One might wish that the author had chosen something other than dryer sheets and bleach to engage the sense of smell in a grocery store where fruits and vegetables, or even baked goods, would offer more enticing options. This would be a reasonable addition to a school, classroom, or public library. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.; Ages 6 to 8.
