All Music Guide - Matt Collar
Much like 2001's Songs I Heard and 2004's Only You, 2009's Your Songs finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane and passionate set of American popular songs and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side -- Only You featured songs of the '50s and '60s -- Your Songs features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic...

While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side -- Only You featured songs of the '50s and '60s -- Your Songs features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner work will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "Just the Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes the album's Elton John title track, his low-key version of Don McLean's "And I Love You So," and the Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Ultimately, Your Songs is a classy and feel-good stroll of an album. [The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition includes "Killing Me Softly" as a bonus track.]

    Soothing

This album is a pleasure to listen to. The songs are all classics and are done tastefully. Some even got totally new arrangements to spice them up. It's the kind of album that can put a smile on your face and calm you down no matter what is going on in your day. Although I love Harry's original music, this album delivers YOUR SONGS with class.

    Love this cd

I didn't know what to expect with this CD, but was pleasantly surprised. His vocals are impeccable, and his choice of songs superb. His voice is sultry and sexy. Some of my favorites on this CD were Smile, The Way You Look Tonight, and Mona Lisa. I cannot imagine many people not liking this CD. It's superb.

Oh those songs that I remember!

Never underestimate the big band sounds from Harry Connick Jr. His new CD "Your Songs" drops today, September 22 and is filled with familiar, favorite songs from when I was growing up but with Harry on the vocals rather than Elvis, The Carpenters... Being that it is a CD full of recognizable songs from my past (They way you look tonight, First time I ever saw your face, Some Enchanted Evening), Harry has some pretty big shoes to fill. First, his voice is very clear and relaxed as always. The music backing him up is outstanding. The songs take on a new life and he gives them his touch without changing them drastically. I don't like it when someone takes a classic song and changes it so much that it doesn't even resemble the great original- not here. This CD is a great toe-tapping, hum-along must for those looking to remember times past!

    Gotta love it

These are standards that have been recorded by everyone. We have all heard them done by dozens of artists. But, they are new and different in this disk. Connick makes each one his own with his personal style. I just love it.

    Not my favorite Harry CD

This is a good CD, though not my favorite of his works. It would make nice background music, but didn't capture my attention enough to sit and simply listen for the hour. I liked the song selections as they are classic romantic hits. Harry's voice is strong as usual, though his rendition of several of the tunes didn't do the songs justice.

    Harry Connick Jr

Though not one of his best CDs it does have its merits. A great CD to put on for background music. Harry does great with some of the songs yet others are not great interpretations of the originals.

    Classic Harry Sings Classic Songs

Harry Connick, Jr. has done it again. He has released a new album featuring some classic songs that are surely favorites of everyone already. Lyrically he can do no wrong with his velvety vocals. Musically he is an equal delight with his big band sound.

    Love Harry, solid effort

I was thrilled to get a chance to review this CD before its release through One2One network. And while I'm a true Harry Connick Jr. fan, I think that this CD wasn't his best. That being said, it's still very solidly listenable, and I'd still buy it for friends and family who love his smooth drawl.

    Easy-Listening

Harry Connick Jr is a wonderful musician, both vocally and instrumentally. This album only did a so-so job of showcasing his talent. The vocals are very reminiscent of Dean Martin, and much of the orchestration is as well. Overall, the album was filled with fairly classic renditions of - well, classics. I particularly enjoyed "All The Way" and "Close To You."

    Just "OK" for me

I expected a little more from this album. I liked the easy listening feel to it, but a lot of the songs sounded "forced". HJC is such a great singer, but I don't think this is one of his best albums. I love the song choices , I just wish he tried to make them him own a little more. Overall a nice relaxing CD, but I'd like to see him do better in the future.

    He is so very Harry!

The measure of truly talented musician is having a style and sound that is totally one's own. With "Your Songs" Harry Connick Jr. proves his mastery once again. "Your Songs" is a wonderfully eclectic collection of songs that Harry makes his own. Reworking hit songs from artists as diverse as the Beatles, Roberta Flack, Elton John, the Carpenters, Nat King Cole and Elvis, Harry creates his own special magic with songs we already love. The only thing that could make these songs better? Why hearing them performed live of course!

    something out of the normal

If you are looking for something completely different from this outstanding performer, this is for you. It is unlike anything put out by him before. My favorite track is "Who Can I Turn To?" This cd is something you can unwind to or have on in the background. Check it out!

    An Enjoyable Listen

I will start off by saying that Harry Connick Jr. is one of my favorite artists. I have seen him in concert a number of times and I own almost all of his cds.

This Cd is good but not my favorite. The are songs on it are enjoyable, though the CD doesn't have any real emotion to it. It is like Harry Connick Jr. just wasn't that into it. He doesn't take any of the songs and really make them "his" (like he has with other covers in the past). If you're a Harry Connick Jr. fan I would still recommend this CD but not to expect GREAT things from it.

    It's good, but predictable

I had the opportunity to review this CD through a network called One2One. I waited in anticipation for the CD to arrive in the mail and as soon as I received it, I plugged in my headphones at work and let the listening session begin.
It's terrific background music when you're multitasking for sure, as other reviewers have mentioned. But most of my CD selections for purchase are ones that I can crank up in the car and just let loose. With this CD, I just couldn't do that without getting bored.
Each track is predictable, so much so that I could predict the arrangements before I even heard them. This might be because the songs are all too familiar, with tracks like Billy Joel's "Just the Way you Are" and Elton's "Your Song" (which ended up being two of my favorites), but my favorite CDs of Harry's are those where he seems to take more risks, like on "Star Turtle" and "She".
This CD would work perfectly as a compilation to play during a cocktail hour at a wedding.

Love songs that will have you singing along

I get weak in the knees when I hear Harry Connick Jr. sing. That voice makes me want to turn down the lights, light some candles and get romantic.

Harry's voice makes me feel mellow, relaxed and in love.

I particularly like Your Songs because so many of the songs are familiar. Even my husband -- who has a take-him-or-leave-him attitude about Harry Connick Jr. -- enjoyed this album. I even caught him singing along to some of the songs in the car.

As they might say on American Idol, Harry Connick Jr. has a way of making these classic love songs his own, whether he's covering Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, The Beatles or Tony Bennett.

My favorite songs on the album are "Your Song," originally recorded by the great Elton John, and "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel. In my opinion, Connick does these singer-songwriters proud with his heartfelt, big-band versions of their songs.

On Your Songs, Harry performs classic songs by some of the greatest musicians of all time, with a full jazz big band and string orchestra. I guarantee you'll know many -- if not all -- of these songs.

    Not Great

This album wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The songs are good, popular older songs. But they're sang in a way that makes them almost unrecognizable and boring. I love all types of music but this album didn't hold my interest at all. I had to force myself to listen through the entire thing. Good, maybe, for people looking for music reminiscent of music of the 1930s and 40s but overall, in my opinion, not worth the money spent.

    Underwhelming

I have a few of Harry Connick, Jr.'s albums and I generally enjoy his performances. I love the quality of his voice and the types of songs he tends to sing, including many of the songs on this album, but I found myself to be a bit underwhelmed by this new release. The music is "nice," but often seems a bit simplistic and unoriginal. Especially since there are so many great renditions of these songs out and available already, I had hoped he would do something a bit more interesting with many of the songs. Overall, I had hoped for more, and I REALLY wished he did NOT redo "Your Song;" It was terrible.
