All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown actually began life in 1966 as a record album MGM 900, Clark Genser's collection of songs based on Charles Shultz's popular Peanuts comic strip. It was expanded into an off-Broadway musical in 1967, retaining the loose structure of the songs in a series of vignettes, and ran over 1, 500 performances. Annotator Mike Isaacson claims it is "the most produced musical in history," in part, no doubt, because the subject matter concerns children, the songs are simple, and the cast has only six characters, making it ideal for schools. The Broadway revival mounted in 1999, though not a financial success, was probably a good idea because it ...

The Broadway revival mounted in 1999, though not a financial success, was probably a good idea because it afforded an opportunity to revise and update the work to make it even more acceptable to those schools. Director Michael Mayer rewrote much of the libretto and brought in musical supervisor Andrew Lippa, who wrote new arrangements for half the songs and added two new ones, "Beethoven Day," which found Lucy using such contemporary slang as "Whatever," and the excellent "My New Philosophy," a song for the newly added character of Sally. On this cast album, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown comes full circle to be a record again for the fifth time, and it remains charming, with a good cast featuring Anthony Rapp as Charlie Brown, B.D. Wong as Linus, and Kristin Chenoweth as Sally. Despite the revisions, it will never be Rugrats which is okay with most listeners, and that may keep it from repeating its '60s success, but it remains an ingenuous piece.

    Heart-warming...

While there are a few odd vocal quirks, I searched around the different versions before deciding definitely on this one. I think the singers capture the spirit of the songs better than other versions. Still, I think there could be room for improvement.

    A classic come back

This CD contains some favorites from years gone by (one song I sang in a 3rd grade concert decades ago) and some new songs that are sure to have you singing along.

    Awesome!

This was a great cd, although it was a little disturbing to hear Snoopy sing. LOL!

The Gang swings...and makes a HIT!

This is a great album for anyone who has ever loved Shultz's ''Peanuts''. My favorite song is ''Book Report'' in which all the characters cumulate their reports in harmony. While not as musically profound as other modern musicals, ''Charlie Brown'' retains youthful innocence that is somewhat of a relief. The cast was very well suited for this task. B.D. Wong uses Linus' lisp very accurately and Stanley Wayne Mathis (an excellent singer) sings ''Beethoven Day'' superbly. This musical is also memorable because both ''Sally'' and ''Snoopy'' recieved Tony Awards for their performances (which were great as well). In short, this musical should be posessed by anyone who is a connesouire of musical theater.

    charlie brown

this cd is so much better than the off-broadway version with gary ''radar o'reilly'' burghoff. with the addition of schroeder and the great song ''beethoven day,'' this cast recording is very enjoyable and fun to listen to.

    Geezers!

This is one of the best and most enjoyable Musicals I have seen/heard! Rent's Anthony Rapp does a brilliant Charlie Brown, while other great singers are on as well, Kristen Chenoweth, Roger Bart, Stanley Mathis and B.D. Wong! Awesome!

    They Are GOOD, Charlie Brown!

This new recording is a fresh take on this Broadway musical with a cast that is vibrant and full of life. Rent's Anthony Rapp (Charlie Brown) and Tony(C) award winners Kristen Chenoweth (Sally Brown) and Roger Bart (Snoopy) shine along with other actors B.D. Wong (Linus), Ilana Levine (Lucy) and Stanley Wayne Mathis (Schroeder). Fun and entertaining for kids of all ages!
