Overview

Now in paperback: The New York Times bestselling author and star of A&E's reality series Big Spender, Larry Winget, cleans up America's personal finance crisis

More than 40 percent of families today are feeling financial pressure: spending more than they earn, and worrying about retiring and being dependent on the government, family, or charity. Larry Winget knows. He grew up poor, then made and lost a fortune when a business in which he'd invested went bankrupt. But he worked his way back from rock bottom to become a multimillionaire.

In You-re Broke Because You Want to Be, Winget expands on the ideas that have made his popular television show Big Spender a hit and offers straightforward talk about coming to grips with your finances, such as:

· Feel bad. Have remorse. You need to feel deep emotion to take action. So start crying and take responsibility.
· Figure out who you owe and how much you owe. It'll be a scary number to face, but you need to know where you are and what you have.
· 'People are stupid, lazy, or they don't give a damn.' You already know you need to do something; Larry will help you finally do something.
· Are you more interested in looking cool and being cute or providing a financially secure future for your family? How you spend your money will tell you that. With a boot-camp regimen that is steeped in personal accountability, Winget cuts through the double-talk contained in most finance books and presents a simple, guided program that is sure to motivate anyone out of their money problems.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
If you're spending more than you're earning, you have good reason to feel bad, but not to feel lonely: Forty percent of American families are in the same floundering boat. Larry Winget, the author of It's Called Work for a Reason!, has punched out another no-nonsense tome on freeing yourself from debt. As in his Shut Up, Stop Whining, and Get a Life, Winget refuses to linger on extenuating circumstances or other excuses; he presses on with direct, caustic advice on setting your financial house in order.

Buy this book, read it and then do it!

Excellent book and a great motivator for all aspects of living (health, job, family, finances, etc). His "in your face" attitude is a welcome change from the political correctness seen everywhere. He tells it like it is and doesn't apologize for the bluntness.

Even if you don't like $$ /numbers this is easy...his book contains all the worksheets and explanations you'll need to get out of debt or just get motivated to do better in other aspects of your life

As stated in my headline - BUY the book then you can write in it and fill out all the exercises as you go through the book and not waste time finding paper and copying things down.

    Really useful!

This is a great motivator - tells you how it is in simple language. Even it you think you know how to save/deal with your money, this is a great reminder of basic things to do. We really liked the book, and it's helped us save money!

    Nowhere to hide

I truly adore the direct, shoot-from-the-hip style that Larry offers in this book. Often there are statements that jump from the page and are very thought provoking. Rather like having a friend give us blunt feedback, which is really what I needed to hear. I took note of his principles and went to work at budgeting, which was not my strong point previously. Since then I have a much better awareness of my outgoings and have created an achieveable path on the road to reducing debt. A must read if you want to get ahold of your financial reins.

Some of us really need to hear this

Larry Wingett is tough and abrasive, and tells you what you don't want to hear -- but need to! I chose the book thinking I might glean a few little tidbits to help me on my journey to financial comfort, but thought I came under the heading of "not my fault." Wingett easily and painfully showed me that it WAS my fault - and then didn't even try to comfort me! He DID show me that I could correct my course and succeed, but that it is up to me. I think we all need to stop being coddled and have someone like Wingett to just kick us in the behind and tell us to stop whining!

You will learn something. His Language will trigger a change in you!

I have tried to quit smoking for years. One story in this book and I haven't even looked at a cigarette. It's about priorities, not just budgeting. Read it and let it change your life!

    So Helpful and Brutally Honest

This book was such an eye opener. It was brutally honest about why you are in a financial pickle and gives clear cut solutions. I devoured this book in 2 hours.

    Stop Whining

Mr. Winget provides a kick in the pants for anyone who is in debt or who goes spending every last dime of their paycheck. If you're like most of us (I was), you NEED this kick in the pants.

Winget provides solid ideas of how to overcome debt and earn more income. And while he doesn't coddle you, and there are no "easy" answers in here, he definitely changed my mind about what I was willing to do to get out of debt (e.g. I swallowed my pride and picked up an extra job).

Thanks in part to Mr. Winget, my financial situation is much better than when I read the book.

    It begs the question.

The contents are very well organized and relevant to many people, young and old, smart and stupid. He writes the language the way people talk. He pulls no punches, creates no illusions.

The book is about honesty. Being honest with one's self. Most of us who are in a financial bind are there because of the dumb decisions we made. He points these out as if he were sitting at the table with the reader.

I couldn't put it down. It is now a leafy looking book with all those little yellow sticky notes coming out on the side, bottom and top.AND, I now have a budget. All I have to do is figure out a way to make some money in this market.

Maybe he could write a book on that.

    Great help

Written for us regular people, this book shows us the real reasons why we fall into the deadly spiral.

If you never had a problem with your balances going to a worrisome level, do not buy this book. Otherwise, why are you not yet reading it?

    A good place to start

I have been looking for that book that would give me some good places to start in making adjustments to my budget. This book fit the bill. He is very straight forward but gave me the things I needed to hear to move forward. I now feel I can look forward and that I owe it to myself to do what is needed. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a place to start making changes.

If you are broke, you must by this book & READ IT!

As the saying goes, "If sense were common, everyone would have it". Larry Winget doesn't pull any punches, as well he shouldn't. Of course he's saying you cannot spend more money than you take in if you want to get ahead. Just as you can't take in more calories than you burn if you want to lose weight. But a lot of us happily keep our heads in the sand while we spend & try not to notice the "Should I really buy this?" blinker in the back of our brain. Larry hangs this attitude way out in the open for everyone to see and makes it impossible to ignore, and it gets very uncomfortable, because it's the truth. One or two pieces of advice may be extreme for some people, such as selling your furniture and sitting on the floor, but it is mostly practical advice we can actually use. He has countless ways of exposing and crushing the excuses we have for staying in the financial ruts we've made for ourselves. He also shows you all the things you can do to dig yourself out, no matter how deep your debt is. Including changing your way of thinking about spending & earning. This book may as well be called "You're Only Spiting Yourself", for if you ignore the very valuable information in this book, that is surely what you are doing.

Great book. Tells it like it is. No holds barred. Helped us avoid bankruptcy. Thanks Larry!

We're real estate investors who have lost our shirts inthe real estate crash, so we're in a very difficult situation financially. Haven't been so broke since we got out of school, 20 years ago. So I was looking for some different thinking that wuld help me avoid bankruptcy and get our debts paid off. I got a ton of ideas from Larry's book, and he really made me think differently about our situation. I'm selling stuff, grabbing odd jobs where I can, gotten rid of every unnecessary expense that he lists in his book, and more more more. I eesepcially appreciate his candidness about bankruptcy. We're at a spot where we could file for bankruptcy, but we had the feeling that we shouldn't do it if we could avoid it. Larry's advice: avoid it like the plague! And he lays out why we should avoid it. We'll make it. We'll bounce back. And Larry's book will be part of the solution. Great book. Tells it like it is.

Food for thought and then some...

I've read various self-help books of varying topics and none were as "REAL" as this one. Mr. Winget has a way of telling it how it is...If you're trying to figure out how to get your finances back on track, then this is the book for you! If you have a friend who is always broke or complaining about money issues...this book is for you to give to them!
Great read. I plan on reading his other books!
