Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Quentin Blake's irrepressible people of a certain age romp through a virtually wordless delight . . . a wonderful, creative view of ageing and a life affirming pleasure."  —School Librarian

Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
Blake takes a humorous look at old age, picturing folks swinging from branches or sitting cradled in them, enjoying all aspects of life. Eating, enjoying nature, exercising, reading and telling stories, making music, creating, celebrating special occasions, and remembering the past are all depicted. The multitude of drawings lend to multiple "readings," as the eye sees different details and even scenarios each time. The common element is the enjoyment and fascination with which folks attack whatever they are doing—be it savoring fruit or chocolates, doing pull-ups, playing soccer, strung up in a hammock reading, playing instruments in small ensembles, dancing to that music, sculpting, painting, knitting, blowing out countless candles on a cake or primping for some occasion. Many scenes include youngsters enjoying the activities with the "seniors," underscoring the commonality of life at all ages. Illustrations are done in Blake's very recognizable style of pen-and ink drawings with watercolors added. In his forward Blake says setting folks in and around trees allowed a visual metaphor suggesting the vivacity and joie de vivre that exists in older folks. Some of the drawings were initially commissioned for the walls of a senior residential facility. Compassionate and humorous at the same time, these drawings would be great inter-generational discussion starters. Text is limited to section headings. Certainly a great gift for seniors celebrating monumental birthdays, this would probably have little appeal to young readers without an older person with whom to share it. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
