Overview

This Book Addresses the Changing Conditions Youth Face in the New Millennium and the degree to which they are under assault in unprecedented ways. Not only does Giroux examine the problems youth confront in a market-driven society that treats them largely as commodities, he also explores the emergence of a punishing state that produces the harshest elements, values, and dictates of a youth crime complex, one that increasingly subjects poor, minority youth to crude forms of disciplinary control. Also considered is the role that academics and institutions of higher education can play in addressing the crisis of youth and its relationship to politics and critical education. Finally, the book provides a broader theoretical analysis of a ruthless economic Darwinism and its market-based logic of disposability. Giroux examines this market fundamentalism, increasingly devalued but hardly dead, as an educational, cultural, and political discourse that has gutted the social state and produced a set of policies that have had dire consequences for society at large, and especially for young people.
