Overview

When Yugi beat Kaiba at a card game, little did he know the consequences: a trip through Kaiba's "Death T" — a theme park of death — and a series of evil spells against Yugi's family. It doesn't help that Kaiba's little brother also has a score to settle.

Good manga, but it's all about a card game and people playing it

Good start to the Duelist series. Compared to vol. 1 of the original series, it's amazing to see how much the art has improved. The character designs are cleaner, sharper, and closer to the familiar Yu-Gi-Oh! style. The pages aren't as crowded with panels, making the story's pacing better. I think I like the Duel Monsters story better than the episodic format of the first series, which featured a new kind of game in almost every chapter, because the games got a little boring for me, and I like how Duel Monsters has a overarching plot. I wouldn't say this manga is for everyone though, because right down to it it's about people playing card games. There's a plot, because Yugi has to save his grandpa and there's a mystery behind the Millennium items, but most of the chapters (at least in this volume) are dedicated to characters dueling each other in a card game.

A Great Way to Kick Off the Dueling!

This first volume of Duelist is a good start to the many more to come! Although it has a few faults it still deserves 5 stars, or in this book's case star chips. It keeps to our favorite duelist but he's a bit more daring and he thinks of things you never would. And it takes off after the original 1-7 volumes and Yugi already realizes that 'The Other Yugi' is real, and both Yugi's are fired up to take down Pegasus and save Grandpa!

More Tame but still Questionable for Younger Readers

This Yu-Gi-oh! Series is much more tame than the original and more like the television show, but is still questionable. The manga overall is pretty good and I think that it is better than the first Yu-Gi-Oh! Series. Parents of younger fans should still probably check this manga out before letting their child buy it, however. For older readers though, I recommend skimming it first before buying to make sure it's worth the price.

    Promising

This manga is what Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters is based off of (minus the battle with Kaiba, because that was in an earlier volume). This starts the Duelist Kingdom arc with Pegasus challanging (and ultimiatly forcing) Yugi to participate in his tournament. Some deatils in the manga are quite different from the anime, for instance, Granpa's souls is not trapped in a card. As far as accuracy goes, Viz is doing an...ok job. Don't get me wrong now; they did an excellent job in keeping the character's names in tact. Who the dubbed anime calls Weevil, Rex, Valintine, and Serenity are given their original names (Insector Haga, Dinosaur Ryuziki, Mai Kujaku, and Shizuka). However, they are still calling some of the cards their English names, not all of them...but some. Also, the sub-script 'Duelist' was not on the original version. The entire manga series is just called Yu-Gi-Oh. Still, this is a very good volume. They will be realsing them every month until the Memory World arc, and this volume seems to show the others will be just as good as this one...hopfully.

    Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist V.1

After Yugi, beat Bakura in Monster World, everybody gathers in Yugi's house. An invitation arrives for him from Maximillion Pegasus, creator of Duel Monsters. In a duel, Pegasus uses his shadow powers to defeat Yugi and trap his grandfather in an LCD television. Now, Yugi and friends set off to Duelist Kingdom, where a duel monsters tournament is being held. With more on the line, they are in high hopes of getting Grandpa's soul back.
