Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Long ago, floods that were taking homes, farms, and anything else in their wake and washing them away forever hit China. The emperor called on Yu to help save the country from this terrible plight. Yu realized that he was actually following in the steps of his father who had also been called upon to stop the floods many years before. The first chapter explains what his father did in trying to stop the floods and gives the readers insightful information to understand the full legend. Unfortunately, his father was unsuccessful, but he did produce a son named Yu in the form of a golden dragon whom he knew one day would be called upon to take over where he had failed. This myth takes the reader on an exciting adventure where Yu conquers the floods and spends his life determined to refill all the springs so that fertile land can be given back to the people. But when Yu learns that the floods are returning, he calls on magical creatures to help him confront the water god. What do Yu and his friends do? Is he successful or does he fail as his father did? This book is written in the graphic format, which is a favorite of mine! It makes it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. Young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on will also enjoy the graphics and fast paced text. At the end of the book are a glossary and a mini biography about the author and artist. Also included is a list of other books and websites that might be of interest to the reader. I recommend this book.

Gr 1-3 - The first book is a retelling of the story of Hades's kidnapping of Persephone into the Underworld and Demeter's plea to the Olympians to bring her back. It's written at a very introductory level, and the creators try a little too hard to allude to other myths and bring additional Olympians into the text, which makes the otherwise dynamic narrative somewhat stilted. The artwork is excellent throughout, and the glossary will aid readers with unfamiliar words. The second book introduces elements of Chinese mythology. The introduction clarifies that while Yu was real, the story is legendary. Unfortunately, the art doesn't match the flow of the narrative, and often the characters look more European or Native American than Chinese. These titles will do well in libraries where comics or mythology books circulate, and especially where the "Jr. Graphic Mythologies" series (Rosen) is popular.-Alana Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT
