Yuri's Brush with Magic by Maureen Crane Wartski is an intelligent novel for preadolescents. Featuring Japanese folk tales told in a contemporary setting, Wartski's adventure ... novel explores the complexity of family relationships and how generations-old misunderstandings can cause rifts that affect the children--and how to heal those rifts. Nine-year-old Tammy is worried--her mother lies in a coma and her father is overwhelmed. Out of nowhere her great-aunt, "Mean Yuri" Hamada, appears to whisk Tammy and her older brother, Ken, off to Emerald Isle. Ken plots to return home by impeding Yuri's resolve with acts of extreme brattiness. But Tammy is captivated by Yuri's storytelling, the way her brush brings old Japanese folktales to life on her canvas, her aunt's past. She's as concerned about a buried nest of loggerhead turtle that may not hatch. Wartski skillfully blends these subplots with themes of renewal and transformation. Overview

Editorial Reviews

Cindy Hudson
Yuri is a mystery who gradually reveals herself to the children, and the reader gets to see her unfold as Tammy and Ken do. While at first I was put off by the extremes of the supporting characters in the story, I began to see their personalities as parallel to some of the characters in the old legends. The nesting habits of sea turtles is also part of the storyline of Yuri's Brush with Magic, and the author includes lots of sea turtle facts at the end of the book. They are great for discussion, and mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged 9 to 12 can also talk about how miscommunication can lead to misunderstanding, the lessons taught in the old legends, friendship, and more.
The Mother-Daughter Book Club
Eden Manseau
There are several nice little nuggets of wisdom delivered by adults: "There are two sides to every story," "Pick your battles," "I've said things in anger that I don't feel good about now," etc. There is a bully character who is the summer charge of an equally small-minded adult. This adult makes one brief ethnic slur ("I've always said you people can't be trusted"), but it is not the focus of the conversation, and it will likely go over the heads of most young readers. This book would be a good choice for an elementary school book report, or a children's book club.
Story Snoops
Midwest Book Review
It can be hard to deal with a sick mother and new authority. "Yuri's Brush with Magic" is a novel aimed at young people. Tammy and Ken cope with their mother sick in the hospital with no certainty that she'll return. When their Aunt Yuri comes to take care of them, adapting isn't easy. But Yuri has something to encourage family among them, and the kids are rushing to find a secret behind the little magic their Aunt has for them. "Yuri's Brush with Magic" is a fun and thoughtful read, very highly recommended for young readers with an interest in Asian-influenced fiction.

    Excellent read!

Yuri's Brush with Magic is a fascinating blend of magic, history, adventure, tenderness, and excitement. My entire family loved this book - adults and children alike. The multiple interwoven plots are thought provoking, and the relationships among the characters are intriguing. Amidst some sadness is hope, and from some conflict comes growth. Truly a beautiful story which will inspire. Highly, highly recommended!

An excellent book for 9 to 12 year old children and beyond.

Maureen Crane Wartski has written a wonderful, absorbing book for boys and girls that has the capacity to draw young people in from the very beginning. From its skillfully drawn characters, both young and old, its attention to current real life issues, concern for animals and the environment and the many vicissitudes of growing up; this book hits its marks. The author does not sugarcoat the themes or their resolutions.

Unanswered questions remain as they must. Characters grow and develop, change when possible. There is much substance in this little book that makes it readable, humorous and worthwhile. Very worth buying & keeping.
