Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 9 to 14.

What a great book! In the early 1960s young people enjoyed skateboarding, but the popularity of this sport came to a halt in 1965. The place that once had skateboarders now had surfboarders. Jay Adams and Tony Alva decide to put their surfboarding skills to their skateboards and find they can do the same rides on them. The problem is the wheels and skateboard decks break in a short period of time. With new urethane wheels and better boards, the boys talk the surf shop into selling the new skateboards. The owners of the shop create a team and enter it into a contest. This team is called the Z Boys and they win all the top prizes with their free style skating. The popularity of skateboarding was on the rise. The Z Boys have found the perfect use for empty swimming pools that eventually leads to skate parks. This book is written in graphic format that is a favorite of mine. A graphic format is perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. Young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on will also enjoy the graphics and fast paced text. The full-color graphics make an enormous impact on the story. At the end of the book are pages that include more information about the Z Boys, a "Glossary" with a pronunciation guide, and a list of other books and web sites that might be of interest to the reader. These web sites are particularly helpful as they provide step-by-step instructions for using FactHound. I do recommend this book. Both boys and girls will enjoy reading it! Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
