Overview

So, what's really going to happen on the winter solstice of December 21, 2012? Zombies are going to destroy the world. That little nugget of wisdom should not surprise anyone. One can never fully discount the apocalyptic emergence of an undead pandemic. How did this happen?

Governments rush to vaccinate their citizens against an exceptionally virulent form of the H1N1 virus. However, certain celestial events cause the sun to release enormous amounts of solar flares and radiation starting on this fateful day. In the span of a few months after the winter solstice, thousands upon thousands of individuals treated with an inadequately tested vaccine become increasingly ill and eventually die. We all know what happens then.

Read along and find out the details. Follow our protagonists as they fight to survive...working their way to a rumored safe haven in Maine...

Meet the Author

Mitch currently lives in Arkansas. In mid-2009, he became a labor office statistic - along with millions of others - as he was laid off from his job of over a decade. With ample "free" time on his hands for the last half of 2009, Mitch began writing his first novel about how he imagined the zombie apocalypse would begin.

    500 pages WITHOUT Zombies--Come on?!!

Good long read however approximately 500 pages are filled with background info and NO Zombie activity. Too many characters and switching back and forth between them and locales. Characters could be developed more. Good storyline with a unique ending.

    Only mediocre

I'm not sure why this book has received such good reviews. The writing is only okay. The great relationship between two of the main characters does not seem close and funny and loving as the writers intends, but forced, and the humor is lacking. And why would any author include so many characters that other characters within your book find annoying? If you find them annoying, and your characters find them annoying, don't you think the readers will too? It's quite a turnoff to read about people that I wouldn't like or couldn't identify with in real life. While I wanted to follow the storyline and keep reading to see where it ended up, I stopped reading halfway through the book. I just couldn't take any more.

    Meh

Seriously, 600 pages till we encounter a zombie? For a zombie book thats pretty lame. Hard to like any of the characters. Difficult to get through. One half star.

    Huh

Once again reading reviews to help select a book has let me down! This book is long- over 1200 pages. However much of that is more like back drop. In fact, there is close to 400 on the people and company that make the virus without really putting anything 'scientific' regarding the vaccine- just page after page of charactors chit-chatting, eating, etc. Once in a while one of.them 'loads data onto a spreadsheet'...I seriously don't understand how so many pages can be devoted to nothing specific- so much so that you do not have any idea what these guys do, especially the ahole boss.

    Bored

FOUND THE FIRST 60 ODD PAGES INTERSTING-THE REMAINING SECTIONS WERE FILLED WITH TWO MUCH BORING DETAILS. THE HUMAN ELEMENT BECAME SECONDARY.

    Less than good

Poorly written sorely in need of a good editor. The story line holds promise but the writing could not pull it off.

    An unexpectedly enjoyable read!

Very fast paced. I found myself wanting to read "just a little more" before going to sleep. Well written, because you simply don't want to put it down. The character development had me on the edge of my seat at times. I appreciated the fear and confusion the characters were going through. So many zombie stories make it appear as if the character has trained their entire life for just such an occurrence, but it was clear no one had any idea what was happening to them or what do to. They simply wanted to stay alive, making it even easier to empathize.

I definitely recommend this book for the sheer enjoyment of the read.

    Excellent Zombie Novel!!

Amazing book! I couldn't put it down. I love every aspect of the story line and following the characters through their struggles. I highly recommend this book to any Zombie loving reader. I can't wait to see what Mr. Cook does with the follow up.

A great addition to the zombie mythos

Strong storyline and good pacing; if you're a fan of "The Walking Dead" then this is a book you need to add to your collection. The characters are fully evolved and you can feel the danger as they do. There is a strong gritty realism that makes you think "What would I do?" At a little over 300 pages it's a quick read but you want to read every word. I know I'd read more stories set in this world. Only a small warning that this book is not all ages appropriate for language and violence.

Not worth your time. Poor charecter development, tired and predictable plot and elementary writing. It sucked and i am deleting this book from my library!

    Decent read

While I enjoyed this novel overall, I didn't care for the way the plot jumped around back & forth. Despite being over 1000 pages, it felt to me like it ended in the middle of the story in a completely hopeless place for the characters. There were a few formatting issues, but they didn't distract too badly & were a minor annoyance.

    Enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. 1200 pages of classic zombie fiction. My only criticism is that the author droned on in a couple of places but otherwise great read!!!
