Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
The life of Zac Efron, who most famously portrayed Troy Bolton in the triumvirate of Disney's High School Musical movies, is examined here in this title from the "Star Biographies" series. Roughly half the book covers Efron's life before making it big. Raised in California, Efron was a diligent student who earned good grades. Efron enjoyed playing sports in school, and from an early age liked singing and acting. After performing in school plays, he was referred to a talent agent, and after some time landed small roles on television shows. His first regular role was on the show Summerland, and the High School Musical movies followed soon after. Despite his fame, Efron comes across as just a regular guy and a hard worker. The author discusses Efron's life in Hollywood, his charity work, and his upcoming plans, including his deferred acceptance to the University of Southern California. Devoted fans will probably enjoy this despite its slight content, which covers basic facts. This series may attract older teen readers interested in the celebrities, but the wholesome content and writing level are aimed at more of a tween audience. Short chapters, bright colors, a varied layout, quotes from interviews, sidebars, and ample pictures make this short book a quick read. A glossary, further reading, index, and links to internet sites via the publisher's FactHound website are included. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor

Gr 3-6-These fluffy biographies are visually attractive but have little substance. The bold graphics and colorful sidebars give the series a teen-magazine feel, with topics such as hairstyles and fashion choices at the forefront. Short, simple sentences discuss family background, career highlights, and other personal bits of information that generally stick to more positive, less controversial topics. Tweens looking for fun browsing will be drawn to these books, but that's about their only use.
