Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Molly Krichton
This "Young Heroes" series introduces readers to young people who have made a difference in the lives of others or have overcome difficult circumstances in their own lives. The books are well indexed, with glossaries (words found in the glossary are highlighted throughout the book), notes, and recommendations for further reading. Books are divided into sections, the first introducing the reader to the subject through biographical details, then to the philanthropic cause of the individual with background information. The third section explores the individual's charitable organization and how it has impacted the life of the founder and the lives of others, and finally, the reader is shown the positive outcomes of the subject's efforts, and how the reader can become involved in the initiatives begun by these young people. Color photos can be seen throughout. The Zach Hunter volume focuses on a global effort started by this teenager. Hannah Taylor details Hannah's volunteer efforts at a more local level—providing aid to homeless Canadians in her city and country. Pearce writes in a journalistic style that is easy to read. The information is presented purposefully and accessibly. These titles might be best marketed as recreational nonfiction reads that will inspire young activists, as the demand for resources on these subjects may not be great for biography and research assignments.
