Overview

Zowie! Who's that zany fellow zipping across the front cover and the following pages of this book? Why that's the amazing a busy Zachary Z. Packrat, who's a pleasant zealot for collecting things and stashing them in his home. He's a Zonie (lives in Arizona) but has cousins all over North and Central America.

This book about Zachary is for fun; but remember, it's based on a true story, so it's for learning, too. It's for children, and it's for adults who mimic the lovable Zachary by gathering and collecting all sorts of things.

The tale of Zachary is told with rhyming verse and cartoon illustrations. But first you'll read about how his collections help scientists learn what the earth was like many years ago. And at the end, you'll think about questions such as: "Why are items from the past important? What can we learn from them?"

My son recently asked me to read one of his favorite bedtime books, Zachary Z. Packrat and His Amazing Collections, to his class. The kids loved the humorous rhyming text and spent a lot of time studying the details of each colorful illustration. The line that got the biggest laugh was, "Who knows when he might need doll clothes for his toes?" I love this book because in addition to Zachary's zany story is a prelude about Packrats, explaining how they live and how scientists learn from them, as well as Questions for Discussion at the end.
