Children's Literature - Cheryl PetersonZamani wakes up excited because he is going to market with his father and older brothers for the first time. He is proud to lead the brown calf to sell even though the calf is special to him. At market, his father gives him some coins and tells him he may buy whatever he wants. Zamani wants a white "kanzu" to wear to school, but then he spies a beautiful beaded necklace his mother will love. Zamani makes his choice and experiences the joy of giving of his first gift. This is a beautifully written tale about family life and growing up from the perspective of a different culture. The illustrations are lovely muted browns and oranges.
