Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- Zeee, a very small, very ancient fairy, despises people. They can't see or hear her and, consequently, they frequently destroy the homes that she has painstakingly discovered and furnished. Although she often wreaks vengeance upon these ``pests,'' it is time consuming and wearying. One day, exhausted and in great danger, Zeee is rescued by a human girl who can actually see and hear her. Pandora befriends the fractious fairy and offers her dollhouse as a haven for all time. In this newly illustrated edition of a 1965 story (Harcourt, o.p.), the pictures vary in size, from full page to circular insets; colorful and attractive, they feature subtle shadings of brown and green with occasional flashes of red. They are especially effective when depicting Zeee's size in relation to humans or in showing her furniture fashioned from pods, shells, fishbones, etc. The problem is that while the format, subject matter, and interest level are appropriate to early elementary students, the writing, vocabulary, and lengthy text that is not broken down into chapters are more suited to fourth or fifth graders. Thus, the book will be best used as a read-aloud to younger children in one-on-one situations. --Valerie F. Patterson, Queens Borough Public Library, NY

The size of a bumblebee, with a temper as sharp as the stingers on her fingers, Zeee is "a bad fairy and proud of it." In reality, though, she isn't bad, she just gets angry with people who cannot see or hear her and thus inadvertently destroy the homes she meticulously establishes under overhanging leaves, in a forsaken sand pail, or in an abandoned wasps' nest. Not until a young girl rescues Zeee from the clutches of a curious cat does the little fairy befriend a human and find a permanent home in the child's luxurious doll house. Gaber's lush watercolors delight in their conjuring of Zeee's first tidy home, with its milkweed pod bed, clamshell bathtub, and chrysalis lantern. The artwork is equally adept at painting the tiny fairy within her natural surroundings--perched atop a dried-up Queen Anne's lace blossom or trapped in a sticky spider web. The velvety textured visuals and the way the spunky fairy takes revenge on the trespassing humans brighten a lengthy tale that will appeal especially to fans of such other diminutive literary characters as the Borrowers.
