Overview

Zelda's having the most exciting day ever—her parents are taking her on a trip to the big city! The fun begins with an early-morning arrival at the train station and doesn't stop until the sleepy little girl is treated to the glorious sight of the city at nighttime. During one action-packed day, Zelda will visit the art museum and the toy store, eat lunch in a fast food restaurant, see a 3-D movie, and watch a street magician, among other adventures. Best of all, you can directly participate in Zelda's outing because this oversized novelty book provides a removable map to read, art postcard to send, perfume strip to sniff, toy plane to fly, and 3-D glasses and a cap to wear! The book even includes instructions on how to make your own special "Z" cap.

Inspired by his observation of children's curiosity and excitement during trips to the big city, the author/illustrator of Little Red Plane and Max Loves Sunflowers has created an exuberantly illustrated book stuffed with super surprises. Reach inside and experience the magic of Zelda's day.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
A trip to the big city becomes a collecting expedition for young Zelda—and for readers too, as multiple pockets hold a removable map, a postcard, 3-D glasses, a perfume sample, a paper glider, and other trinkets. Zelda records her excitement as, with her parents, she visits stores and a museum, stops for fast food and to watch a street magician, goes to a giant-screen movie house, sees the bright lights come up as the sun goes down, and conks out on the train ride home. Wilson-Max (Max Loves Sunflowers, 1999, etc.) renders crowded scenes in bold lines and whirls of bright color that dovetail neatly with the special effects. This oversized extravaganza, with its pop-ups and unattached pieces, won't stay intact long in a library setting, but Zelda's exuberance and the hurly-burly pictures make such urban visits as Chris Soentpiet's Around Town (1994) or E.L. Konigsburg's Amy Elizabeth Explores Bloomingdale's (1992) seem positively sedate. (Picture book. 5-8)
