A must for the seeker's library.

A wonderful insight into the origins, and the ebb and flow of thousands of years of Zen evolvement. I never knew such a written record existed until Hoover compiled and organized this scholarly, insightful, comprehensive, and entertaining account of the personalities and times which gave us the Zen we know today. I applaude the author with one hand clapping.

    Very well written

I thought that this book would be heavy reading, especially because the topic covered such a large period of time and so many of the zen ancestors. However, the writing was so well done that I wanted to get back to reading it. The chapters are short so that you can easily pick it up and put it down. I highly recommend this book.

    Zen historical cliff notes

This book slides through hundreds of years of history focusing on the lives of key individuals with only minor attention given to the development of zen.

    Great history

This would be a great read for anyone interested in learning how Zen Buddhism came into being. This history traces Buddhism from the time it arrived in China, through it's evolution into what eventually made it's way into Japan, and the final changes it underwent there to become the Zen known today. What impressed me the most was the clear indications made between historical knowledge of the patriarchs of Chinese Buddhism, and what was most likely written to embellish their stature.

A fascinating history of the major influences on the evolution of Zen. A real eye opener for anyone who is interested in studying the history of buddhism. Great entertaining tales of monks achieving an enlightened epiphany through various methods such as being shouted at and undergoing beatings by their teachers. I was literally laughing out loud.

    don't recommend

Very highly complicated for me, could not get into it. But other people who are in that sort of thing might like it.

    Check it out

Hoover did a remarkable job of outlining the history of Zen. I now have an historical context for the the Patriarchs whom I have met over the years.

    Zen Stories

Thomas Hoover has written a concise, easily accessible history of Zen. He does this in the way that Zen has been passed down since it's beginning, as a series of stories. In stead of Koans Mr. Hoover uses stories from the history of Zen, which have made the paradoxes and complexities of Zen philosophy accessible to the non-scholarly reader.

    Very interesting....

I wouldn't call it the 'best Zen book' written, but it is a fascinating, if not a touch confusing (to me), history of the development of Zen. More of a knowledge of the history of China would probably have helped me understand the background to the historical movement called Zen.

A very in depth look at the history and progression of Zen throughout its known conception. A must for those inquisitive of its origins.
