Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In a charming book that combines the mastery of the guitar with the mastery of Zen, Sudo introduces the Zen concept of Shyguo, according to which the spiritual journey, the Way, and the practice of art become one and the same. His explanation of Shyguo in conjunction with the 12 points of focusDspirit, rhythm, technique, feel, perfection, mistakes, stages, plateaus, limits, follow through, taste and collaborationDexplains the transformation of Zen practice into artistic savvy. In Zen Sudo finds a cohesive and insightful way of thinking about playing the guitar, or, for that matter, any musical instrument. His instructive little book teaches that mastery of Zen, as well as mastery of art, requires concentrated practice rather than simple instruction. For the student of guitar, Sudo's book offers important insights into what separates adequate musicianship from mastery; and, for the student of Zen, it illuminates a side of Zen practice not often discussed clearly and practically. I like books that simplify things in an interesting way and this book delivers. You really can learn the basics of Zen by playing the guitar. But the lessons don't stop with the guitar, it applies to all facets of life. So even if you don't play the guitar, you can learn about zen. And likewise, if you play the guitar but don't really care about zen philosophy, it will still apply to you. But I think those who are just a little interested in either topic will find this a simple and easy read, but packed with wisdom. It makes me long to wear the white belt.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is not a how-to book but a how-you-can book. 'Three chords and the truth' never rang so true or hit home so hard. The author encourages you to express YOURSELF and to always share and always learn. Very encouraging and refreshing. A fun, light read.

I got this book for Christmas, and the philosophies and approaches are already beginning to alter my grades, my relationships, my happiness, and of course my playing. If I could manage it, this book would have 50 stars! Not just for musicians, this book will guide ANYONE to a happier and more fulfilling life!

This book is a great way to see your self through to being a true source of your own voice. It expresses the very nature of self expression and a way to have you happen on a level that transcends ordinary thinking or lack there of.

One becomes a teacher by first learning from a teacher....once a teacher, he learns from his student. Zen Guitar shows you the Way to always be both. In one day's time I altered the way I practice, listen, teach and even pick up the guitar. You'll never be the same after this one

This is a book that attempts to place the individual on the path of self discovery. It offers a unique perspective that has long been lacking in the study of music. In it you will find the tools to help you grow, not only as a musician, but as a person. In the end you may come to realize that these efforts are one.

A lot of books attempt to gain mileage by adding zen or tao to their titles. Not so in this case! An elegantly written book for anyone wanting to play (guitar or any instrument) better.

My guitar teacher got me into this book; he called it the 'old testament'. It will make the music you play sound perfect to your ear, incorporating old zen sayings and calming, intelligent writing style that includes some rules for everyday life. Not strictly for guitarists. It is the musician's Bible.
