Overview

Since the ninth century the image of the Zen master has made Zen Buddhism famous throughout East Asia and now around the world. The authors have selected nine major Zen masters from different historical periods and different geographical areas, from medieval China to early modern Japan to contemporary California.

Each essay presents the primary features of that master's image for consideration. The authors assess the personality and charisma that define each master and the relationships of the master with those around him. Attention is given to the behavior and comportment that shaped the image of the master, the primary teachings for which he is known, and the context in which he lived and taught. The lasting image of the master is considered, with emphasis placed upon the symbols with which he has been identified, the enduring influences and contemporary images that have derived from each master, and the techniques and methods by which the classic texts project and maintain that image.
