School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-- ``Change your act or get out. Nothing great about flying. All witches can do it.'' This edict from Head Witch Hildagrump sends Zena off to contemplate her problem. A chance meeting with a cat in the Witch Woods helps her discover her magic and save the witches. Unfortunately the magic does not save this book. The story moves quickly, but often the dialogue is difficult to follow. Likewise, the numerous illustrations (ink, dye, and gouache painting) are busy and sometimes so crowded that it is hard to recognize the characters and to keep up with the flow of the action. Despite the humor and themes of dealing with fear and improving self-esteem, the total package is confusing. Save struggling new readers from further frustration by letting this one fly by. --Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID
