Zhang Xiao Tao: Dream Factory Rubbish Heap

Overview

These softly colored oils of copulating frogs and of faces reflected in used condoms accumulate layers fast. Cells swim over their surfaces as if across a slide--or are those drops of blood?--and tropical fish flit through the debris, all against idyllic blue-green. Of Beijing the artist writes, "fantastic, full of action. All is on the move, all is running, all souls fight and compete with each other." He could as easily describe his own work.

This is a catalogue of chinese painter, Zhang Xiaotao, featuring a compilation of essays written on his artistic development in the period 1998-2004. Interviews with the artist, ... artist biography and artist statement are included. On one hand he makes use of vulgar and popular images, both ancient and modern and on the other hand, he tries to make them free from the "plane" narrative logic so as to help those images into a contradictory and dramatic state and bring about a new socialized meaning. The artist says, "Sometimes I feel like a grain of sand, an ant, a dead rat, decaying stinking garbage. In my paintings those small parts of human existence I want to show: the angst, the insignificance, the composition, the stress.", English/ Chinese, Year2005, Illust. B/W154, Illust. Color7, ISBN 9889808609, Code 5548. Softbound, In Pristine Condition, Bio. Cat. of exh. Pages 128, Size 8 1/2"x 11" 4. Read more Show Less
