Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers Live, Vol. 1

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Dave Gil de Rubio
Recorded between 1995 and 1997, Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makers's first live album is a mix of the collective's most socially conscious original cuts and covers. Carrying on the Rasta legacy that seems ingrained in the Marley family DNA, songs like the funky "Conscious Party" and the uplifting "Free Like We Want To Be" address the need for a righteous outlook on everyday social injustice. Father Bob Marley gets his props as his kids deliver vibrant covers of "Stir It Up," "Could You Be Loved," and a version of the sunshine anthem "Jammin'." His son Stephen's nasal phrasing on the latter makes him sound practically indistinguishable from his late father. Wailers ...

Wailers favorite Curtis Mayfield also gets his due by way of a spirited reading of his civil rights anthem "People Get Ready." Other highlights include the swirling "Higher Vibration" and the Smokey Robinson-like pop of "One Good Spliff." This exemplary set ties up on a strong note with the studio cut "I Know You Don't Care About Me," a powerful commentary on the death of Amadou Diallo that features cameos by Morgan Heritage, Buju Banton, Yami Bolo, Damian Marley, and Bunny Wailer.
All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
This recording, the first live album to feature Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers, shows the Marley family-based group continuing on the same path cut by legendary father Bob Marley. The strongest performances on the album may not be from Ziggy, but rather the powerful backup vocals provided by his sisters. The manic pace of the performance seems to undermine the relaxed vibe that reggae is known for, but Ziggy's talented songwriting and performance skills still shine through. Fans will find a number of classic songs that span Ziggy's career, as well as a nice performance of the Bob Marley classic "Could You Be Loved."
