“Pure whimsical delight. Magic does blow throughout the world, and Zip proves it!" —Lauren Myracle, New York Times bestselling author of ttyl

one girl + one scooter = journey of a lifetime

When Lyssa’s mother died, so did the magic—that special something that always made the sunflowers grow taller and the strawberry jelly taste sweeter. So when Lyssa receives the alarming news that her childhood home in Texas is about to be bulldozed, she sets off on a two-wheeled cross-country journey to save her family home—and with it, the last remaining sparkle of her earlier life. On her odyssey, Lyssa meets some decidedly unusual people—from rowdy cowgirls to a chorus line of singing mermaids—and discovers adventure at every highway turn. But it’s the magic that she uncovers, little by little, along the way that will ultimately put a new zip in her step!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Rollins debuts with a clever, all-American retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, with 11-year-old Lyssa Lee in the role of Ulysses. After Lyssa’s mother died, Lyssa moved from Austin, Tex., to Washington State with her stepfather, Michael. But Michael can’t replace her mother, Ana Lee, a talented performer who made every day an adventure. When Lyssa mysteriously discovers a paper airplane bearing the message that her childhood home will be demolished, she travels to Texas via her scooter, Zip, to save the house and the memory of Ana Lee. Along the way, Rollins recasts the travails Ulysses faced in novel ways: the Lotus-Eaters become the reality TV–obsessed Lotus Crew, sirens sing at a burlesque club—and beware the hot tub at the Motel Charybdis. Rollins’s story moves at a fast clip, yet the numerous characters she introduces are well-drawn, from caring but awkward Michael to Penn (née Penelope), Lyssa’s acrobatic best friend in Austin. Slapstick humor and a sense of magic help maintain this affecting story’s levity as Lyssa learns to overcome her fears and accept change. Ages 8–12. Agent: Stephen Barbara, Foundry Literary + Media. Children's Literature - Janice DeLong
When Lyssa's mother dies and she is left with her step-father, it seems that light and magic have gone out of her life forever. Although Michael, the step-father, tries to do what is best for his newly acquired charge, Lyssa is lonely for the charm that was her singing, dancing mom. The only concrete connection to her mom is Lyssa's scooter, named Zip, which she believes was built for her by her biological father when she was much younger. Discovering a mysterious message, explaining that the home Lyssa shared with her mom—states away—is going to be demolished, the desperate tween heads out alone on Zip, determined to save the house. Along the way, Lyssa meets many strange and dramatic characters who later prove to be true friends, as does Michael. Although some reviewers may find this story enchanting, it also sends mixed messages about honesty, running away from home, and dealing with the death of a parent. Although it is a fantasy story, important lessons about the above subjects could be easily woven into the plot but they are not. This reviewer would suggest caution in recommending this book to its intended audience. Reviewer: Janice DeLong

Gr 4–7—Lyssa can hardly say the words to acknowledge that her mother has died, and, with her death, the magic is gone. Her mom, a talented singer, let magic "float through her life like a breeze." She was imaginative and told Lyssa that she would have grand adventures. When Lyssa learns that her mom's former home is scheduled to be demolished, she knows she must return to Austin, Texas, to do whatever she can to save it from destruction. She leaves Washington and the home she shares with Michael, her stepfather, and sets off on her quest with little more than the $13 she has in her backpack. Her journey is both realistic and fanciful as she encounters a wide range of colorful characters. Zip, her trusted scooter, is her constant companion, but she hears her mother's voice encouraging and comforting her on her adventure. A sandwich reminds her of the perfect sandwiches Michael made for her and she realizes that she's starting to miss him and some of their shared experiences. Lyssa wants to find her own voice, just like her mother, and her journey helps her appreciate Michael and her new home. This is a clever novel with a bright and spunky heroine. Readers will root for her and empathize with her search to find her place in the world.—Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diego

    Lazulihearts wonders chapter one

Lazulikit woke up cold and wet. She shivered and said, "Enderstar?" Her father was greencough and the leader of Desertclan, so he was no help in response. "Diamondribbon?" She called her mother's name. This time, it happened. The silver she named Diamondribbon closed her blue eyes and pulled Lazulikit up. That was when she realized that she was sleeping just under ice in the water. Shadowkit. He had played a trick on her. Diamondribbon carried her into the leader's den, where she slept in a hole lined with ivy leaves and herbs. Abruptly, Enderstar screamed, "Sandstorm!" Diamondheart, not hearing Enderstar form the far corner, went hunting. "Mommy!" Lazulikit shrieked, along with her littermates Icekit, Splatterkit, and Badgerkit. The sand was getting to Enderstar. He coughed badly and fell asleep. Unfortunately, they never saw his eyes open again. They never felt a breath on their faces when they rubbed against his face. Time to face the wild. They all spread long for Starclan, aiming for a new life.
