Overview

Imagine A River Runs Through It seen through the eyes of Dave Barry and you'll get an idea of Rich Tosches' sharp-eyed reflections on the art, hobby, and obsession of fly fishing.

Armed with a rod, a pen, and an eccentric sense of humor, Pulitzer Prize-nominated sportswriter Rich Tosches headed for the Grand Teton Mountains, site of the World Fly Fishing Championship, and cast a keen eye on his fellow trollers from all over the globe. This encounter-and many others during a lifetime dedicated to the pursuit of fly fishing -are captured in a side-splitting collection of observations on every angle-and angler-of one of America's favorite pastimes.

Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles Times Book Review
...his humor is an explosive mix of Dave Sedaris and Dave Barry.

    964 Bad Jokes

I always enjoy a book that makes me laugh and Rich Tusche's Zipping My Fly made me chuckle seven times before I reached page 12... But then I paid for it. 233 pages and 964 bad jokes later (the worst of which are repeated half a dozen times per chapter), I had a headache and was finished reading the awful thing. And a bit embarassed of keeping track of how many times it made me wince. I think if I ever again see the words "that was just a joke" or "I am not kidding about this" in print again, I will give up on fly-fishing books and resort to reading grade-school writing assignments. Helpful note to author: We all know Rush Limbaugh and Oprah Winfrey are fun targets, but how about a crack on his politics or her book club? All you could come up with were slams on their weight problems? Isn't that a little juvenile coming from a man in his late 40s? As far as the Bill-and-Monica jokes that show up at least once every three or four pages, please give us a break. That pool has been fished out long before you fired up your word processor and tried to be funny.

    Couldn't even finish

Dont waste your time with this one. I can handle crude jokes, but most of these are just lame.

    Horrible.

He gets one star for the ability to write. How many times can one person write 'Anyway' at the beginning of a pharagraph and still get a book published. Was there even an editor? He is so rude that he must be a liberal. I couldn't belive the amount of crude culural jokes in the first 29 pages before I put the book back on the shelf because I didn't have the invoice to exchange it. This was the first book I have ever read that I disliked.

    No, It's Not Bill's Autobiography

When I first saw the title of this book I presumed (incorrectly) that it was Bill Clinton's autobiography about his presidency. However, as humurous as that book will be when written, I can honesly say that I was pleasantly surprised at how funny this traveling fly-fisherman's book was - and I don't like to fish (although eating it is a different story). What I do enjoy are books that make me laugh and clearly this book does that. The author's humor at times was "different" or eccentric, but in the end it put a smile on my face. It would make a great stocking-stuffer if you have a good sized stocking.

Zipping My Fly: Moments in the Life of an American Sportsman

If the holidays get you down, read Tosches' book. At least one laugh per page, as well as passages that will touch your heart. This book isn't about fishing, as much as it's about people and places........Tosches is a natural born storyteller. What a great read!

Zipping My Fly: Moments in the Life of an American Sportsman

This is the funniest book I've read in years.....laugh out loud funny. I don't know much about fly fishing but I didn't have to. It's about people and places. You'd have to be sad and depressed not to love this book. It's an easy read and a real page-turner.
