Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Russell W Steele, M.D.(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: The sixth edition of this time-honored book on pediatric disorders now contains over 1,000 pages and a few thousand incredible photos, illustrations, and radiographic images. The numerous photos particularly are excellent in showing the varying presentations of genetic disorders and disease processes. A chapter reviewing pediatric radiologic diagnoses has been added.
Purpose: Since its first edition in 1987, this book has served as an excellent resource for teaching students, residents, nurses, and practitioners who care for children in the recognition and diagnosis of pediatric disorders. It broadens the visual experience of students and clinicians through rapid visual examination and review of laboratory tests and imaging studies. It also serves as a refresher for experienced clinicians when they encounter a rare disease.
Audience: This book should appeal to a wide range of students and all professionals who care for children. Most pediatric offices keep a copy for physicians as an initial ready reference once a differential diagnosis has been established or a patient is referred with an established diagnosis. It is also an excellent reference for many subspecialists, competing with their subspecialty books and, in many cases, offering superior photos and illustrations.
Features: With its visuals and concise yet thorough text, this is an excellent reference for all physicians. It has the largest collection of photos, radiologic images, figures, and diagnostic techniques ever assembled. The numerous photos of diseases with dermatologic manifestations and dysmorphic features of genetic abnormalities are the reasons most physicians use this book. This edition also comes with access to an online version that includes diagnostic videos and other resources.
Assessment: Current books and handbooks cover all of this material, and websites such as UpToDate and eMedicine provide more current and complete information for each of these disorders. However, this book is not intended to be encyclopedic. The extensive photos and concise yet thorough text are what make it quite unique. This new edition offers important revisions, updates, and some entirely rewritten chapters. The new chapter on radiologic diagnosis is important for primary care physicians, since so many diagnoses are now made with imaging.
