Overview

High above the jungle floor, fearless Zoe, explorer extraordinaire, catches a glimpse of the rare wild Addiebeast. She springs over the treeline in hot pursuit--

And then Zoe's mother calls, "WE'RE LEAVING IN FIVE MINUTES!"

Yet Zoe still has so much to do on the playground, which transforms into a jungle in her imagination! So against the ticking clock of Mama's countdown, she chases the Addiebeast across precarious logs (balance beams), escapes from wild monkeys in their natural habitat (the jungle gym), and climbs to the very top of the rainforest (a tree house). But can she catch the elusive creature in time?

A quest book, a sister story, and a race against the clock, Zoe's Jungle is a heartwarming tale of adventure and imagination.

Children's Literature - Lorrie-Ann Melnick
Zoe is a fearless explorer in pursuit of the Addiebeast but her mother is short on time. Zoe is momentarily jarred out of her imaginary jungle and back into the playground when her mother tells her that she only has five minutes left. What is an explorer to do? Why, hop back into her imagination, as quickly as possible, of course! Zoe chases the Addiebeast (her sister, Addie) across a log (balance beam) that lies just inches above the hungry jaws of alligators, sneaks through dense underbrush (a play tunnel), and climbs up to its lair (a treehouse) to capture the Addiebeast. They finish their chase just in time to join their mother and walk home to begin the best part of their day—story time! This is the third in a picture book series that includes Zoe gets Ready and Zoe’s Room, No Sisters Allowed. Light-hearted pen and watercolor illustrations depict both of Zoe’s worlds, real and imaginary, with warmth. Reviewer: Lorrie-Ann Melnick; Ages 3 to 5.

PreS-K—In the third engaging tale about Zoe and her younger sister, Addie, the girls and their mother visit a playground. Zoe's highly tuned imagination soon turns the small park and play equipment into a wild jungle. As a brave and undaunted explorer following the illusory "Addiebeast," the child searches by using her binoculars, swinging on vines, riding a wild boar, and braving a crocodile-infested river. For each of the last five minutes of playtime, their mother counts down the minutes left. Every time she calls out, the siblings are immediately brought back to reality for a few seconds, as shown in the colorful, full-page pictures, and then swiftly return to their hunter-and-hunted game. Charming pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations reveal to readers both the lush green jungle teeming with wild animals and bright flowers, as well as the impressive playground just ripe for imagining. Wonderful vocabulary introduces such words as "glimpses," "stealthy," "relentless," "ingenuity," and "unfathomable." Children will enjoy watching Zoe and Addie play their game while also searching for the Addiebeast's polka-dotted "hide," thus allowing them to take part in the pursuit. Use this title with Peggy Rathman's 10 Minutes Till Bedtime (Putnam, 1998) for another countdown story of a child with a deadline.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI

Zoe and Addie have been given a five-minute warning from their mother—will their game of chase end on time?Murguia has a way of tapping into young children's foibles. In Zoe Gets Ready (2012), Zoe gains the responsibility for choosing her own outfit. In Zoe's Room (No Sisters Allowed) (2013), Zoe learns to share. In this latest Zoe adventure, Zoe and Addie's mother tells the kids they have five minutes before they must leave the playground. Zoe erupts into outraged shouts and defiant flailings until her mother declares, "Four minutes!" Zoe had better make the rest of the time count. Addie imaginatively transforms into the wild Addiebeast and Zoe, the explorer, must capture her. They race across roaring rivers (the play pond), swing on vines (the monkey bars) and crawl through thick jungle underbrush (a tunnel). Addie's orange polka-dot dress turns into a spotted tail or paw flashing off-page, hastening the chase. But all the while, mother's countdown continues, in ever-more-emphatic speech bubbles. Will the Addiebeast be caught? Zoe is full of spitfire and dash, plus there is a veritable explosion of sparkles on the cover. How are young readers to resist? It's an obvious overture to parental transitioning tactics, but it's an imaginative adventure just the same. (Picture book. 3-6)
