For the first time...Zolo
is featured in a book!

Bright and colorful, silly and whimsical, the popular construction toy Zolo has helped youngsters create lovable, wacky characters since 1984. Now Zolo teaches children the alphabet—in its own inimitable way.

Our hero Ozlo—a pink-and-green dog with silly ears—is the guide through Zolo land. A fun, tongue-twisting text lets kids discover a flock of frilly flamingoes...a jiggly jellyfish jamboree...leaping lizards and lollipops, and lots, lots more! Everything from A to Z takes on a whole new Zolo look. Included is an index of all the things to discover on each page, beginning with the appropriate letter.

As a bonus, 150 Zolo stickers of characters and shapes are bound right into the book, so kids may create their own Zolo World.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publishers Weekly
Glaser and Higashi take their line of Zolo playsculpture toys-a kind of hipster mutant Tinker Toys-as the inspiration for this uneven, hyperactive alphabet book. Ozlo, a Zolo-composed dog with a pink body, green head and ping-pong eyes, guides readers through the letters ("Ozlo has something he wants you to see! Starting with A and ending with Z"). Several other Zolo characters make cameo appearances, including beatnik-esque BoDiggety and a fashionista named Oola. A handful of layouts bubble with cheeky, twitchy charm. "J" takes Ozlo to a blue-and-green striated ocean, where he juggles smiling jellybeans and jumps rope with roly-poly jellyfish: "Jeepers! A jiggly jellyfish jubilee! Ozlo jumps and juggles joyfully." For "N," the page goes black: "No Ozlo. Nope. Nothing. Nada. Nil"; and in an illustration of an X-ray (for X), readers can find the entire alphabet inside the patient's head. But many of the letters come across as a jumble of fluorescent pastels, dingbats, dizzying patterns and indiscernible shapes. The self-conscious na vet and amphetamine aesthetic fueling the pictures may be some grownups' idea of high style, but most young readers won't be able to follow the alphabetic thread. The book's last two pages are devoted to 150 Zolo-themed stickers. Ages 3-up. (Mar.) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Any new ABC has to find a gimmick to stand out from so many others. The creators of Zolo toys employ a jolly rhyming couplet for each letter for their text, which uses the letter to start several of the words. All around the pages are objects beginning with that letter for the reader to discover. A key in the back gives the complete list. Ozlo, a pink and green dog-like critter is the guide as we are introduced to the fantastic creatures made from Zolo abstract shapes, actively busy around each letter's page and giving this book its distinctive look. The shapes are blobby or wiggly with clean-cut outlines making for a machine-made look. Most page layouts are very busy; some are elegantly designed; all are visually aggressive. Included are 150 small stickers of the letters and the creations to add to the fun of the reading, looking and discovering. Libraries will have to decide what to do about them. 2003, Harry N. Abrams,
