Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Rosen is the owner of Zillycakes, a bakery in Buffalo, NY, that provides unique baked goods and offers cake-decorating classes. This is the perfect cookbook—with cupcakes featuring, e.g., bride and groom zombies in a graveyard—to make your next Halloween party a hit. Step-by-step illustrations will guide novice bakers to create complex-looking cupcake designs. Lots of photographs and illustrations make this an enjoyable and instructional cookbook. Highly recommended for entertainers and bakers. Libraries in need of a beginner's cupcake book should consider Martha Stewart's Cupcakes.

    Cute and creepy!

I realy appreciated all the recipes and tips in Zombie Cupcakes. She teaches you how to color fondant, make royal icing, dark chocolate ganache, and Italian meringue buttercream. The cupcake recipes are something special also, like the Applesauce & Caramel, Honey or Almond and White Velvet flavors. The ideas in Zombie Cupcakes are pretty spooky, with lots of body parts and gore with piping gel "blood". Little mini brains are placed on top of honey cupcakes in Brain Food. A green zombie hand emerges from the cookie "dirt" in the Zombie Rising cupcake. There's even "poison" cupcakes like the Toxic Bite (red velvet), Biohazard ingested (key lime) and the T-Virus (blue banana). "Know your zombie" mini-tests and zombie tips are scattered throughout Zombie Cupcakes and add a little extra fun. If your friends and family like cute and creepy treats, then Zombie Cupcakes is the book for you!

    You will scream with delight.

Rating: 4 ½ (out of 5) Zombies have been on the rise in pop culture in recent years. While I am mostly immune to the phenomenon, I am pleasantly giddy to see Zombies making appearance in baked goods. What a fun way to liven (or in this case "undeaden") up a creepy occasion. Upon opening the book I admit I was a little intimidated. My foray into the baking scene was short-lived and amateurish at best. I felt reassured, however, that even I too could benefit from this book upon seeing that each recipe has a difficulty rating (using skulls, no less) and that there are very detailed instructions for each piece, where to obtain the various ingredients, and how to improvise if an ingredient is not readily available. I expected to see the usual creepy crawlies that grace platters at Halloween parties everywhere, but what I didn't expect was the uniqueness and originality of each and every decoration and topping. Not a gummy worm in site! The decoration instructions are very detailed and include pictures and diagrams. There were a couple cupcakes that had me saying "huh?", but most were eerily delightful (see eye poppers, brain food, and the crows). What was even more thrilling (particularly for the decorating-challenged like me) is that each cupcake had its own unique recipe! This feature makes the book a useful edition to every baking kitchen-- even if you don't know fondant from fondue. From basics such as vanilla and devil's food cake to the more unique key lime, Italian meringue, and chocolate-mint, this book has something for everyone. Additionally, Zombie enthusiasts will just die over the "Know Your Zombies" Q&A and factoids tucked in throughout the book. This book is sure to lighten many dark hearts and make kids squeal in delighted horror. All in all, a very enjoyable, useful cookbook I could see myself going to more than once a year.

    Kids will love these!!

Zilly's talent is outstanding! This book is a fun one for children as much as for adults. I love any book that can easily involve children in a family activity. The second my kids saw some of the cupcakes, they wanted to start making them right away! Each child picking out their gorey favorites ( I mean what do you expect from my kids - thier motto the grosser the idea the better!)

Two special ideas in the book is the rating system- the recipies are rated in difficulty by skulls. And on some of the pages there are some trivia questions which is interesting as it makes the book even more interactive.

I reviewed an e-book copy and I am hoping to pick up a paper copy as this would be a great addition to any cookbook library. Especially if you have kids around.

One of my favorites was "The Birds" - it made me realize how much this book could be used for things. For example our family has movie night. I think it would be fun if we had "Horror Night" and the kids could spend the afternoon baking cupcakes for the movies. You know make "The Birds" cupcakes for Alfred Hitchcocks movie "The Birds" or The Bride and Groom" for the movie of Nightmare Before Christmas".

How much fun that would be munching away on these delicious cupcakes while watching horror films.
