Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Karen Leggett
Striped, spotted, furry, and feathered. The first four words of the book are repeated later in the text as children count a striped tiger, spotted giraffes, feathered ibises, and furry baboons. What appears to be a simple counting book offers much, much more. Animals like the ibis are unusual even for zoos. Words can be learned in context. "One Bengal tiger relaxes in tall, wild grasses." Children rarely see photos of a tiger relaxing, but this definitely appears to be one cool cat. In some cases, children will be challenged at least a little bit to find the right number of animals: babies are often hidden close to a mother, for example. Brilliant and interesting photographs and short, informative text are the highlights of this work in the "A + Counting" series, which also features titles on counting backward, counting by twos, more, or less. There is a very short index (which even includes the numbers themselves), a page of interesting facts about the animals, a glossary with words like bamboo, blowhole, and spindly; and a list of additional books and reference to the www.facthound.com Web site, with links to age-appropriate sites for each book. This is an outstanding series of concept books for new and pre-readers; the photographs make the book interesting enough to use with older children who are English language learners.
